KILLAVULLEN WIN OPENING MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURE – Killavullen minors advanced to the semi-final of the minor B football championship after a 4-12 to 1-8 victory over Castlelyons in Kilworth last Sunday morning.

Eoghan Buckley opened our account with a goal after four minutes. Niall O’Neill and Eddie Cotter added further points for us before Castlelyons came thundering into the game with a goal and three points to lead after 15 minutes. However, points from Mike Fresh, James Fitzpatrick and another goal by Liam Fox had Killavullen out in front at half time 2-6 to 1-3. In truth kilavullen could have had many more scores on the board but some poor shot selections coupled with some unfortunate misses in front of goals had added unnecessary pressure on the team, who over all were well in control.

Killavullen played some lovely attacking football in the second half and two more goals from the hard working Eoin Birchill and James Fitzpatrick and further points from Mike Fresh, Eddie Cotter and Noah Butler led Killavullen to a comfortable win.

Killavullen will now face Buttevant in what is a mouth-watering tie between two of the better teams in the B grade.

Team: Cian Lankford, Liam Nagle, Brian Cotter, Darren Murphy, Eoin Birchill (1-0), Mike Fresh (04f), Fionn Magner (0-1), Eddie Cotter (0-2), Eoghan Buckley (1-1), Noah Butler (0-1), Pádraig Looney, Niall O’Neill (0-1), Liam Fox (1-0), James Fitzpatrick (1-2), Seán Wolfe. Subs: Seán Browne for Niall O’Neill, Darragh O’Grady for Liam Fox, Cian O’Connor for Darren Murphy, Ben Hunter for Pádraig Looney, Pádraig Cronin for Cian Lankford.

AWBEG MACRA

It was many a tie straightened and necklace tied by Awbeg Macra na Feirme members last Saturday night, September 23, as they headed to the annual ‘Avondhu Macra Ball’ which was held in Springford Hall. Over 250 Macra members from across the country including a large contingent from Awbeg Macra sat down to a delicious four course meal which was followed by music from the hugely popular ‘The Waxies’.

The club expressed sincere congratulations to all involved in organising this very successful event including Awbeg’s own Niamh Curran and Breda O’Keeffe. Festivities continued well into the small hours but that didn’t stop Awbeg Macra from both competing in and helping to run the Avondhu Beef and Sheep Stock Judging Competitions which was kindly hosted by Kanturk Mart the following day.

PLOUGHING TRIP – A large cohort of Awbeg Macra na Feirme members attended the National Ploughing Championships in Tullamore last week but few could have had a more successful visit than Awbeg’s own Denis ‘Dinny’ Murphy. Both he and Awbeg chairman Anthony ‘Salmon’ McCarthy did the club proud by competing in the ‘Macra na Feirme Harry Ferguson Safe Tractor Driving Competition’. They did extremely well in the event; so much so that Denis placed second overall and, in doing so, won a trip to the Massey Ferguson factory in Beauvais, France and a €250 cash prize.

UPCOMING EVENTS – The calendar remains hectic over the coming weeks for Awbeg Macra. Seandún Macra are hosting a Public Speaking and Debating Workshop in Watergrasshill Community Centre on Thurday, September 28.

On Saturday, September 30, Awbeg’s quiz team will be heading to the national finals of Question Time in Dublin.

Awbeg’s novice debating team will be competing in the Cork County semi-final against Donoughamore Macra on Sunday, October 1, when they propose that ‘It should be illegal to buy Energy Drinks before turning the age of 18’.

The following weekend, Awbeg Macra’s 2016-2017 Public Speaking Team of Dan O’Callaghan, Breda O’Keeffe and Niamh Curran will be heading to Rome on the Prize-Winners Trip for winning the National Title in that competition last December.

Awbeg Macra will also have teams competing in the Avondhu Round of the Know Your Ag Quiz on Friday, October 13.

Both the Awbeg Men’s and Women’s Gaelic Football teams will be competing in the national finals on Sunday, October 15.
