National Dairy Show returns to Millstreet’s Green Glens

- JOHN TARRANT

MILLSTREET stages the 35th National Dairy Show on its return to the spacious Green Glens Complex on Saturday, October 21 with an extensive programme scheduled and former rugby great Mike Ross performing the official opening.

Show Director John Kirby pointed out that the event is organised by a voluntary committee selected from the Cork Club, and their commitment and loyalty since the first show in 1982 is to be commended. “I consider myself very fortunate to be surrounded and supported by such a hard-working and experienced group. An event such as the National Dairy Show requires huge commitment, forward planning and hard work from the organisers but, more importantly, demands a high level of funding to make the event fit for purpose”, he said.

“Last year’s show cost over €100,000 to stage, of which a major portion was provided by sponsors and their contribution to the success of the show is hugely valued. Some of our sponsors have been with us since the start and others have joined us along the way with new sponsors always welcome on board”, said Mr. Kirby.

The show director said the event is attracting an ever increasing demand for trade stand space. Last year over 150 stands, all relevant to the dairy industry, exhibited on the day. “This provides attendees a chance to see a great variety of up to the minute technology available on the market as well as an opportunity to engage with trade personnel about what is relevant to their needs”, he said.

Canadian Brian Carscadden is the show judge. Born and raised on a registered Holstein farm in eastern Ontario, his judging assignments have taken him to over 25 countries around the world.

Apart from the cattle classes at the show, there are also demonstrations of cattle and machinery with a particular emphasis this year on farm safety and rural crime prevention.

The artisan food village will showcase produce from up to 20 producers with the exciting addition this year of TV chef Richy Virahsawmy, of RTÉ’s popular Today Show, demonstrating how best to use the produce in a purpose built kitchen.

Younger visitors will love the addition of a small animal farm with exotic species sure to be of interest.
