Macroom GAA Juvenile Section round-up
THE juvenile section would like to congratulate the Premier Intermediates for qualifying for the Division 2 League final and thereby promotion to Division 1 and would also like to congratulate Bobbie Dwyer on his appointment as Cork Minor (U-17) Football Manager for 2018 and to wish him every success.
The U-16s played Ibane Gaels (Barryroe/ Timoleague) in the P2 final in Kilmichael on Sunday.Macroom faced a stiff breeze and were in trouble early on. Ibane were good and they raced into a seven point lead, and then added a goal. Macroom’s only reply was a Bradley O’Shea point and at half-time Macroom trailed by 0-1 to 1-12. Re-adopting the orthodox formation on the turn-over, Macroom started with more urgency and scored two points. The badly needed early goal did not materialise. Ibane re-asserted control and finished well ahead by 3-15 to 0-6.
Macroom U-14s hosted Ballinhassig before a big crowd in the Group championship semi-final on Saturday in the Castle Grounds and 27 togged out. The match was a tight tense affair with scores scarce. The visitors went two points up and Seán De Lacey got one back for Macroom. Ballinhassig then added a goal to go four points clear. Macroom responded with a Ben O’Connell goal and another point from Seán, to leave the match tied at 1-2 each at half-time.
After the break Ballinhassig got the first score. Macroom scored the next two points through Kieran Doody and Seán again, to edge ahead with 10 minutes to go. There were scores either end before the Carrigdhoun boys notched two late points to claim victory in a gripping encounter. The final score was Macroom 1-5 to 1-7 for Ballinhassig.
Meanwhile, the presentation of money raised on July 9 from the Liz Lucey Memorial Run were presented to Marymount Hospice.
