The late Jerry Weathers, Banteer

-

ON June 23 this year, Jerry Weathers, Banteer passed away peacefully in his 92nd year after a short illness.

Jerry, who was originally from Rowels, Meelin, married Elizabeth O’Sullivan RIP and moved to Shronebeha, Banteer in the early 1950s where he farmed for the rest of his life, raising a family of six children.

His greatest interest in life was GAA, and hurling in particular. He was a very active member and officer of Banteer/Lyre GAA for almost 60 years and served in many positions in the club, including chairman of Banteer GAA from 1979 to 1991 and for the past 20 years he was Vice President of Banteer GAA Club.

In the 1950s he took great pride in being involved in the three-in-a-row wins for Banteer hurlers. In 1969 he played a big part in reforming the club. He was also a very active member of the well-renowned Banteer Sports Committee and was instrumental in the development of Banteer Sportsfield in the early 50s. In those days, all the work was done by horse, cart and shovel, and the famous Banteer sports cinder track was constructed by drawing cinders by horse from Dromtarriffe, with Banteer hosting many sports events there including the All-Ireland National Championships in the 1960’s and 1970s.

Jerry also served many years as an umpire with his good friend Ger Moran.

Jerry had a great interest in horse ploughing and often made the journey to the All-Ireland ploughing match with other good friends Thady Kelleher and the Horgan brothers from Ballinagree .

Another interest of his was greyhounds, rearing and coursing them in Glantane and other dog tracks.

All his life he had a great passion for card playing and attended many 45 card games in Kanturk and other venues.

He was part of the fabric of the local community and he is sadly missed by all his family and friends.
