Extra marks for tidy towns efforts
THE members of Charleville Tidy Town Committee can feel proud that they have again improved their marks in the 2017 national tidy towns competition, scoring 11 extra points at 273 over the 262 achieved in 2016 in category D of the competition.
They succeeded in securing extra marks in every category in the competition to bring their total marks to 273 out of a possible 450. The adjudicators congratulated the local committee on the wide number of projects they undertook this year and the large number of people that got involved and wished them well for the future.
In the marking they scored 39 points for community involvement and planning, while for the built environment and streetscape they scored 41 points. For landscapes and open spaces, they got 32 points and for wildlife, habitats and natural amenities they scored 26 points and for sustainable waste and resource management they got 18 marks.
Tidiness and litter control was up to 50 marks and for residential and housing areas it was up to 30 out of a possible 50 marks, while approach roads, streets and laneways scored 37 marks.
They commented that the town doesn’t seem to have as many derelict shops as can be found in other towns of its size, and praised the work done on the derelict house in Smith’s Lane and is certainly one to be proud of. ‘You are certainly aiming high and the community co-operation is taking your results higher. Working with the county council is important to achieve both of your aims,’ said the report.
The adjudicators praised the brilliant work that has been done by the members of the local committee throughout the year. This involved many people as well as school children. They are to be congratulated on the work they have been doing and the marking they have achieved in their quest to make Charleville town a better and nicer place in which to live, work and play.
