‘Good governance’ workshops for local community groups

-

CHARLEVILLE organisations and committees may be interested in a governance course organised by Ballyhoura Development’s Community Governance Skills Training & Workshop Programme, which returns this autumn/winter.

The course will have a suite of informative and interactive events for committee members of community-based, not-for-profit organisations, and the trustees, directors, officers, staff of companies limited by guarantee, co-operatives, community businesses and social enterprises.

With the continually evolving landscape of the community and charity sector, this training and workshop series aims to improve knowledge and skills around community group structures; leadership and governance; supporting compliance with regulation and adherence to relevant codes and standards; improving knowledge of committee/board roles and responsibilities; financial transparency and accountability; successful fundraising; managing human resources and adhering to employment law, and better stakeholder reporting and communications.

The programme begins on Thursday 12th October at 7pm at Knocklong Community Centre with ‘Using The Governance Code: A guide to how notfor-profit & community organisations are run, directed and controlled’ delivered by Mairead O’Connor, Training & Advice Coordinator with The Wheel.

Governance may often be seen as a difficult concept to understand and it is frequently pegged as a very dry, theoretical topic to deal with. However, good governance is at the heart of well-functioning organisations and key to delivering on an organisation’s mission.

This workshop seeks to shake up our tired view of governance and also to demonstrate the practical steps to engaging with good governance through the Governance Code for the community, voluntary and charity sector.

All programme events are free though advance bookings should be made through David O’Grady, Development Officer with Ballyhoura Development by email: dogrady@ ballyhoura.org or tel. 063-20511.
