UNDER 12S DIG DEEP FOR VICTORY – Killavullen White 3-6 Sliabh Luachra Gaels 2-6: Ballyclough was the venue last Sunday for a pulsating contest between two incredibly even teams in the under-12 B Football Final. While Killavullen never relinquished an early lead, they were pushed hard all through by a gallant Sliabh Luachra Gaels team that boasted many fine players.
A cracking goal from Owen Magner gave Killavullen a huge boost, but it was clear that Sliabh Luachra Gaels were in equally determined mood. They were unfortunate to have a number of wides in the opening exchanges but fought valiantly to get a foothold in the game, and were rewarded with a fine goal before the break.
Killavullen turned to face a considerable wind leading 2-4 to 1-2 and when the Ballydesmond-Kiskeam combination scored a point with time almost up, to leave a goal between the sides, there was a chance the game might go to extra time. Killavullen defended valiantly, however, and were not to be denied.
Indeed it was outstanding defending that laid the foundation for this exciting victory. Charlie Cremin, Colm O’Mahony, Elizabeth Palmer and Tomás Fennell all worked incredibly hard, while behind them, Darragh O’Connor once again proved his worth with many fine saves.
Evan Sheahan and Ava Hanrahan covered every blade of grass, ably defending when needed and setting up numerous attacks. In such a tight game every score was hard earned and huge credit has to go to the half forward line of Caoimhe Griffin, who scored a vital goal, and Michaela Dennehy, who was deservedly named ‘Player of the Match’. The inside line threatened from first to last whistle and Owen Magner and Niall Feaheny combined for two to six.
Jamie Lowe, James Lyons, Dara O’Neill and Ben Cremin were all introduced to great effect, and played vital roles in the win. The other panel members, Adam Lillis, Eoghan Forde, Conor O’Neill, Séamus Cronin, Luke Forde, Cormac McCarthy and Colm Hayes all contributed handsomely to this successful campaign and every player has brought great pride to the blue and white jersey.
Indeed, such is the strength of numbers and talent at this age, Killavullen has two underteams, and next Thursday evening, the Killavullen Blue team, takes on Duarigle Gaels in their Group Final.
After the game, John Kenneally, on behalf of Rebel Óg, presented the shield to captain, Ben Cremin, who thanked referee, Alec Morrissey, for his excellent refereeing, Ballyclough Club for the use of their fine pitch and the Killavullen mentors and supporters for their encouragement. Finally, Ben thanked Sliabh Luachra Gaels for being fantastic opponents, and indeed they are to be highly complimented for equally contributing to a most entertaining, sporting contest.
Under-14 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL – Killavullen 4-09, Granard Gaels 3-09: Killavullen had a good win over Granard Gaels, at Liscarroll, in wet and windy conditions in the Quarter final of the under-14 Football Championship. With a swirling wind and driving rain scores were hard to come by early on. Killavullen led by 0.03 to 0.00 after 15 minutes. Both teams exchanged points before Granard Gaels struck for a goal to level the game at 0.04 to 1.01. A further point was added by both sides to leave the half time score 0.05 to 1.02. On the resumption Granard Gaels struck for two quick goals, further points were exchanged and with 15 minutes remaining Granard Gaels led by eight points. Killavullen converted a penalty to narrow the margin to five. Two points by Granard Gaels extended their lead to seven. Killavullen pushed forward and were rewarded with two quick fire goals to narrow the margin to one point. Both teams had a number of points and the teams were level as the game entered injury time. Then came the match winning goal for Killavullen to set up a semi-final place against Clyda Rovers.

Under-14 GIRLS NORTH CORK FINAL – Banteer and Killavullen played out a very entertaining North Cork Final on Saturday Despite Killavullen scoring an early goal, Banteer dominated for the rest of the half and led by a score line of 1-9 to 1-3. Despite four points from Ava Hanrahan from Killavullen in the second half Banteer showed their strength and experience to run out deserved winners by 1-15 to 1-8 at the end. While Banteer were deserving winners a special mention should go out to Shania Butler, Zoe Moloney, Caoimhe Griffin and Ava Hanrahan from Killavullen.

HOSTING OF A SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – Killavullen GAA Club was proud to host the Cork County Senior Hurling Championship game between Ballyhea and Carrigtwohill on Sunday. The facilities were in excellent condition; considering the amount of rain that had fallen, in the preceding week, and Rory, our chairman managed to assemble a team of volunteers that ensured that the game past off without a hitch. Carrigtwohill came from behind to win by two points in a very entertaining game, 2-17 to 3-12.

The jackpot of €2,400 was not won last Tuesday night. The numbers drawn were 2, 24 and 33. The draw was held in Griffins Bar. DANCING CLASSES CRYSTAL SWING CEMETERY WORKS ANNIVERSARY MASS

Dancing classes have started in the community centre starting every Wednesday. Dancing lessons will include Jiving, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Slosh and Waltz. These are weekly lessons and will last for six weeks. For further information please ask at the community centre or contact Claire at 087 7833636.
The Tír na nÓg active retirement group have begun yoga classes on Thursday mornings at 10.30 a.m. These classes are open to members and non-members so please come along to try it out. The yoga includes seated yoga as well as normal yoga so everyone is catered for.
The Crystal Swing show will roll into Kilbrin Sports and social hall on the October Bank Holiday weekend. This promises to be a great evening’s entertainment. Tickets will cost €10 and we will let you know when they become available.

KILBRIN HISTORY
Thomas Croke, later to become Archbishop of Cashel and Emly among many other things, was born in Castlecor Demesne on May 28, 1824. He was the third of eight children of William Croke, an estate agent, and his wife, Isabella Plummer, daughter of an aristocratic Protestant family who disowned her following her Catholic marriage in 1817.
He was educated in Charleville, County Cork and at the Irish College in Paris and the Irish College in Rome, winning academic distinctions including a doctorate of divinity with honours. He was ordained in May 1847.
Of course he is most famously associated with the founding of the GAA at a time when he was Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, and the naming of Croke Park in Dublin. Also interesting is that in honour of Archbishop Croke his successors as Archbishop of Cashel and Emly traditionally were asked to throw in the ball at the Gaelic football and all-Ireland hurling finals. Although Dr Croke died in 1902 this practice continued till 1964.
