TOP LEESIDE SHOWBAND STARS AT THE OPERA HSE
SOME of the most iconic names from the Leeside showband genre will take to the stage of the Cork Opera House for two exciting concerts this weekend.
‘Rolling Back the Years – The Legends of the Cork Showband Era, is returning by popular demand after playing to packed audiences last year.
Among those to grace the stage of the venue for the shows will be Joe Mac, Art Supple, Declan Ryan, Tony Stevens and Derek and Mary Burke from Crystal Swing.
Compère for the concerts will be the incomparable John Greene from C103FM.

CARA AND MAJELLA AT THE EVERYMAN PALACE
THE Everyman Palace Theatre will host what promises to be a magical evening of song and banter on Saturday in the company of two of Ireland’s greatest sopranos.
Cara O’Sullivan and Majella Cullagh will take the audience on a truly unforgettable journey with a programme that will include duets including Bellini’s ‘Mira o Norma’, Delibes ‘Flower Duet’ and ‘A Boy Like That’ from Bernstein’s ‘West Side Story’.
The pair will also showcase solo and ensemble pieces from their broad repertoires, interspersed with some storytelling, banter and laughter.

MUNDY CELEBRATING JELLYLEGS AT THE INEC
ONE of Ireland’s finest contemporary singer/ songwriters, Mundy, will bring his latest Irish tour, celebrating the 21st anniversary of his debut album to the INEC Acoustic Club inn Killarney on Friday night.
The Offaly native, who cut his teeth busking on the streets of the capital, released the ‘Jellylegs’ album to widespread critical acclaim in 1996.
Since then, he has gone on to release a further seven studio and live albums as well as cementing his reputation as one of the country most exciting live performers.
Tickets for the gig, which will include the original line-up of artists that played on the album, from the venue on www.inec.ie priced at €20.
RED STRING ABBEY QUARTET AT TRISKEL
THE acclaimed Autumn Quartet series at the Triskel Christchurch Arts Centre will continue on Saturday at 1pm with a concert by the Red Abbey String Quartet.
The Quartet, which will be making its debut at Saturday’s concert, is comprised of young musicians Kevin Jansson (violin), Kate Fleming (violin), Seamus Hickey (viola) and Zoe Nagle (cello).
All four are students at the CIT School of Music and between them have won numerous awards.
The programme for the concert will include Haydn’s Quartet in D, OP. 42 and Mendelssohn’s Quartet in F Minor Op.80.
Admission to the concert will be €10 at the door.
IN TUA NUA RETURN TO CORK FOR CYPRUS AVE GIG
VETERAN Irish band In Tua Nua will bring their 30th anniversary Irish tour to Cork’s Cyprus Avenue on Friday evening.
Fronted by the instantly recognisable Leslie Dowdall, the band was one of the most exciting live Irish acts of the 1980’s, touring extensively across Europe and the US and releasing nine top ten singles.
The band officially disbanded in 1990, with members going onto enjoy solo success, including Dowdall who recorded two albums and the smash hit single ‘ Wonderful Thing’.
In Tua Nua reformed for some gigs in 2004 and again in 2012 when they played a blistering set at Electric Picnic.

LORRAINE HOGAN TO LAUNCH NEW PROJECT
CORK singer/songwriter and artist Lorraine Hogan will launch her latest project ‘Raine’ at a free event at UCC’s Aula Maxima next Wednesday evening at 6.30pm.
The event will see Lorraine première her new four-track EP accompanied by Sam Barker on guitar and Stephen O’Brien on drums, in addition to the first screening of the video accompanying her new single ‘ Breathe Me In’.
Lorraine will be joined on the night by Christopher Marwood, a former member of the internationally renowned Vanbrugh Quartet and lecturer at the CIT and the Royal Academy of Music.
Admission to the event will be free.
‘MARY AND ME’ AT THE WHITE HORSE IN B/COLLIG
THE critically acclaimed play ‘Mary and Me’, written and performed by Irene Kelleher will play for one night only at the White Horse in Ballincollig next Thursday evening (October 12).
Inspired by the true story of Ann Lovett, the 15-year-old Irish schoolgirl who died while giving birth at a grotto in Co Longford in 1984.
The play follows the life of ‘Hannah’ in the months leading up to her death through her conversations with a statute of Mary in the local village grotto.
A fascinating imagining of a young women’s search for understanding, the subject matter is as shocking and relevant today as was more than three decades ago.

COMEDY CAVERN RETURNS TO COUGHLAN’S
THE ‘Comedy Cavern’ will make a welcome return to Coughlan’s on Douglas Street next Tuesday evening under MC for the evening Christopher E O’Leary.
The headline act for the evening will UK stand-up Simon Caine, whose ‘Ask the Industry’ podcast where he interviews people from the worlds of comedy, TV and radio has become a huge online success.
Caine will bring his critically acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe show ‘Laughter is the Best Placebo’ to the venue, with support from an impressive line-up of Irish comics including Dawn McDonagh, Luke Kelly and Bubba Shakespeare.
This promises to be a great night of stand-up with the best news of all being that there will be no admission charge.
HANK HEADLINING ATLANTIC SOUL SESSION
The Atlantic Songbook sessions series will return to the Crane Lane Theatre tonight (Thursday) with a free concert in the company of veteran Cork singer/songwriter Hank Wedel.
The very epitome of a modern day troubadour, Hank gigs all across Cork often playing as many as three gigs a night. He has also plied his trade abroad earning fans in the UK, Russia, Brazil and the US.
As well as playing in numerous bands over the years, Hank has shared the stage with the links of Bono, Declan Sinnott and Shane McGowan.
Tonight’s gig will see Hank showcase songs from his recently released album ‘Living in the Land of Love’ and tracks from his back catalogue.
JOHN BLEK TO LAUNCH NEW CD AT DE BARRA’S
CORK singer/songwriter John Blek will showcase tracks from his third solo album ‘Catharsis Vol 1’ at De Barra’s in Clonakilty on Sunday night.
Perhaps best know for his work with the band The Rats, Blek’s solo career has been a journey of discovery influenced by the folk music of Ireland, Britain and the US.
Written while Blek recovered from a mystery illness, the new album sees him delve into the world of finger-style guitar with its deeply personal lyrics revealing the poignant side of his character.
