Dancing bug bites as Boherbue takes to the Strictly stage
STRICTLY Come Dancing Boherbue style attracted an audience of 800 people to the Charleville Park Hotel last Saturday night where 28 contestants danced their socks off for what has turned out to be a superb fundraiser for the local GAA Club.
Noreen Meade, Rose Murphy, Donnacha O’Connor and Alan O’Connor who sat in the Judges chairs kept the audience in stitches throughout with their comments on each dance and banter with the contestants, while Brenda Dennehy (Presenter on Cork Live TV and Producer at 96FM) played a blinder as MC.
While all 14 couples impressed hugely in their quest to acquire the Glitterball it was Marie Casey and Derry Courtney who ultimately scooped the big prize.
Speaking to the Corkman Derry said that while he was a little nervous beforehand it was a great thrill to win; “we were definitely not expecting to win, we were in total shock” he said. His dance partner Marie Casey was equally surprised. “We were all so taken up with rehearsing and having everything right on the night that any of us did not think about winning, so Derry and I were totally gobsmacked” Marie said.
Helen Lynch, meanwhile, raised the most money through the sale of sponsorship cards.
All the contestants agreed that the entire project was “massive fun” with everyone almost living in the local Community Hall from 5pm until 11pm several nights a week striving to perfect their performances.
Chairperson of Boherbue GAA Club Kiara Linehan paid tribute to the dancers, all those who attended the show and everybody who helped make the event such a success.
“This has been a huge effort by a fantastic committee over the past four months and our 28 dancers have been truly amazing” Kiara said.
She went on to pay tribute to Noel and Nora Naughton of Araglen House Nursing Home who were the main sponsors of the event. “I also thank all the other businesses who came on board and sponsored adverts and spot prizes” she said. “The money raised has exceeded all expectations and will benefit the GAA Club and the entire community who use the facilities.”
