AWBEG MACRA NEWS

When Dan O’Callaghan joined Awbeg Macra na Feirme one year ago, he could hardly have anticipated the year ahead that lay in store. Since then, Dan has gone on to win the National Title in Team Public Speaking, a place in the Prize-Winners trip, the Stag of Avondhu and many new friends throughout the Macra nationwide. Then came the news that Dan had made the final of the National Best New Member Competition. He, and the other finalists, will undergo a series of gruelling interviews before the winner of the award will be announced at the Awards Banquet in Meath this Saturday.

It’s been a very busy time for members of Awbeg Macra. On Saturday Awbeg’s Public Speaking Team of Miriam O’Callaghan, Kate O’Regan and Breda Forrest battled off tough competition to win the Avondhu Round of the competiton with their presentation on ‘The Galway Races’. They have qualified for the next round which will be held on November 18. In the Impromptu Solo Public Speaking Competition Awbeg Macra’s Niall O’Regan was very narrowly pipped into second place, despite it being his first ever attempt at the competition, as was the case for four of Awbeg’s five entrants.

On Sunday night, Awbeg’s Novice Debating Team of Dan O’Callaghan, Aoife Ladd and Fiona O’Connell came Runners-up in the Cork County Final by split decision. Fiona O’Connell was again awarded the Best Debater prize. Awbeg opposed the motion ‘That Marriage is a Contract That Should Be Reviewed Every seven Years’. Novice Debating is an annual competition ran by Cork County Macra na Feirme which gives people, who haven’t debated before, the opportunity to dip their toes in the debating water.

On Friday, two Awbeg Macra quiz teams travelled to Boherbue for Slaibh Luachra Macrra’s Club Fundraiser. The previous Sunday, Awbeg’s men’s and women’s 7-a-Side Gaelic Football teams had ventured to Offaly for the national finals of their respective competitions, while on the previous Friday, Awbeg Macra’s ‘Know Your Ag’ quiz team had competed in the Avondhu Round in Banteer.

The next few weeks are set to continue on as jam-packed as ever for Awbeg Macra. A large number of Awbeg Macra members will be heading to support Dan O’Callaghan’s quest to be named Best New Member at the highlight of the Macra na Feirme year, the three-day annual Conference/Rally, which will take place in Meath on the 27th, October 28 and 29. On November 3 Awbeg Macra will be attending Mitchelstown Macra’s Halloween Quiz. On November 5, Awbeg’s Men’s and Women’s Indoor Soccer teams will be competing in their respective regional rounds.

From November 10 to November 12, the Queen of the Land festival in Tullamore will also see Awbeg Macra head up the county.
