GAA CLUB NEWS

Last Saturday night in Pairc Ui Rinn, Killavullen and Sarsfield played out an absorbing final, in deplorable weather conditions in the final of the Inter Divisional Junior B Hurling championship. This is a game that Killavullen may well feel got away from them. The pitch is over used, and that was a pity, as it hindered both teams who only wanted to play an expansive hurling game. The city end, in front of the goals resembled a ploughed field.

Sarsfield got the opening score from a long range free in the 1st minute and scored another score from another free in the 2nd minute. However, we opened our scoring when we got a fortunate goal in the 3rd minute when Liam Cronin gathered a long delivery, and his shot for a point was partially blocked down. It ricocheted off the legs of Barthly Hayes and a defender into the net on the rain soaked ground.

Our opponents were on top at this stage, and but for a number of wayward wides, would have pulled well ahead in the opening 10 minutes. Nevertheless, with hooking and timely blocks, Sarsfields were not allowed to add to their tally, with Billy Norris, Kevin Fox and Pa Sheehan to the fore in the defence. We got a real foothold in the game, when Barry Murphy finished expertly to the net in the 14th minutes, after Pa Egan and Jack O Connor had combined to set up the opportunity.

We added to our tally in the 16th minute with a free from Liam Cronin. The rain was teeming down at this stage, which made gripping of the hurleys very difficult and holding your footing nearly impossible. Ian O Gorman was very strong in the middle of the field at this stage, and prevented a number of attacks for our opponents. Sarsfields got their 3rd point in the 19th minute and a 4th in the 21st minute. They had a real run at us at this juncture and reeled off another point in the 22nd minute.

We got a point from play from Barry Murphy in the 29th minute, set up by decent play by Charlie Lillis to leave the score at the interval 2-02 to 0-05 in our favour.

Sarsfield made a change in the full forward line, and this change, when they brought this player out the field was to reap instant results with a point in the 2nd minute of the half. The margin of our lead was cut again to the minimum with another point from their half forward line in the same minute, and the game was equalized with a point from them, in the 4th minute.

Sars went ahead with another pint in the 9th minute and now they led by one 0-09 to 2-02. However we thundered back into the game in the next 10 minutes, helped with improved play from Patrick Angland, Liam Cronin, the introduced Gearoid Sheehan, Eoghan Buckley and Charlie Lillis. We scored a point from Liam Cronin in the 42nd minute, to bring parity to the score line again, and took the lead from a Liam Cronin free in the 47th minute. We went further ahead with dipping shot from Pa Egan in the 54th minute.

Barthly Hayes was very effective at the edge of the square where his strength set up opportunities but his bravely meant that he was collecting the ball on the ground. Barry and Bartly combined for a goal opportunity but we spurned that chance. We were awarded a penalty when Pa Egan was held back when he was through on goal. The referee placed the ball in the centre of the square as appropriate, but that area of the field was in a dire state. Barry concentrated on lifting the ball, but he would have been disappointed with his shot, which was saved and cleared. In tight games, that lost was crucial and compounded moments later when we had a player shown a straight red card. In lieu of the conditions and players sliding into each other, and two teams that only tried manfully to hurl, on a bad night, the decision seemed harsh. Sarsfield got a point back in the 55th minute to leave just one between the teams. However we got the game back to a two point margin with a Liam Cronin converted free in the 57th minute after Charlie Lillis was upended, Sarsfield immediately answered that score, with one of their own.

We were holding out at the back, and Gary Lane and Paul O Sullivan should have been awarded frees in the half forward line but none was forthcoming. Then in the 2nd minute of injured time, Sarsfield broke clear and their inrushing player was fouled, and they scored the resultant free to equalise the game.

The sliotar was pucked out, and the referee blew his whistle. Game over, parity but perhaps an opportunity lost. Still, we are in the hunt for that 3rd county title, in this a historic year for the club.

Away Kit–Killavullen GAA played the game against Sarsfields with their new away kit that features the Red of Cork, and the traditional blue of Killavullen. This kit was very necessary due to the number of clashes that occurred during the year, with other clubs, whose colours were too close to our on traditional blue and white hoops. Killavullen GAA is delighted that our great sponsors, Howard Farms, again contributed handsomely to the cost of the jerseys.

The Killavullen pitch was in superb condition for the time of the year, and was expertly prepared with flags and stewards, something that was appreciated by both sides. Kildorrery won the match.

AWBEG MACRA

The saying might be ‘as busy as a bee’, but it’s hard to imagine any bee being a busy as Awbeg Macra recently. Last weekend they travelled en masse to the ‘Queen of the Land Festival’ in Tullamore to support Marie Flynn in her quest for the title.

On top of that, the club has been a hive of activity preparing for the Awbeg’s first ever entry in the Avondhu Macra na Feirme Capers competition, which will be held in Castlemagner Community Centre on Friday, November 24. For Capers, club teams compete against each other to put on the best 20 minute variety show they can. A team can have up to 15 people on stage, who try to sing, dance and joke their way into the judge’s good books.

Awbeg Macra’s Public Speaking team have been buzzing away in preparation for the national semi-final of that competition on this Saturday, November 18.

November is flying along for Awbeg Macra. On Saturday, November 18, the national semi-final of Team Public Speaking takes place.
