Delight as Mallow CU set to open in Charleville town

- MICHAEL MCGRATH

News that Mallow Credit Union is definitely opening its new office in the former Charleville Credit Union building to give a full service to the people of the town and district, which they have been deprived of in recent weeks, was received with delight by people in the town.

Cllr. Ian Doyle, who has worked tirelessly to remedy the situation on foot of Charleville Credit Union being put into liquidation by the Central Bank, reports that Mallow Credit Union will offer a fully functional credit union service to local people and former members of Charleville Credit Union, which, he says, is welcome and exciting news for the people of the town and area.

It is understood that a number of the former staff of Charleville Credit Union will be retained by Mallow Credit Union to service the Charleville members, which is welcome news as members of that staff were highly rated and hugely popular with customers of the former credit union branch.

The membership of Mallow Credit Union voted at their recent annual general meeting to extend their common bond to the Charleville area by an overwhelming majority of the members present. Mallow Credit Union has had the successful experience of already merging with three other like-minded credit unions in 2016 and now operates a seven-strong branch network with in excess of 30,000 members, thus demonstrating their capabilities of managing a multi-branch financial co-operative.

Mallow Credit Union had applied to the Central Bank of Ireland for permission to extend its common bond to cover the area and this had been approved by the CBOI.
