OVER 2,200 TAKE OFF ON CORK AIRPORT 5KM RUN
RUN IS PART OF SPAR’S FITLIVE.IE SERIES BY THE IRISH INDEPENDENT WITH CORK AIRPORT
THE sound of Cork Airport was alive to pounding feet on Friday night as the 5km run attracted over 2,000 participants in the midnight run.
The hugely popular Cork Airport run is part of Spar’s Fitlive.ie series by The Irish Independent and is held in conjunction with Cork Airport. This was the third year of the event.
There was a fantastic atmosphere created with music provided by RedFm along with a good brisk warm up to keep runners on their toes. Karl Henry took the runners through their paces to ensure they were fighting fit for the unique run.
When the last flight landed, the airport air space was closed down which allowed 2,200 people to take to the runway.
A Charleville resident, Brigita Lukste was the first female winner of the race and Kevin O’Leary won the men’s section.
The 2,200 participants received a goodie bag, t-shirt, medal, refreshments and the race was chip timed.
Cork Airport’s Managing Director Niall MacCarthy said: “We always look forward to the excitement and atmosphere that the annual Runway Run brings to the airport and this year was no exception”.
“Friday night was an outstanding success and I would like to thank all the participants who came from near and far. The Runway Run is a superb example of incorporating fun and unique activities into active lifestyles, something that Cork Airport is delighted to be involved with,” he added.
The Runway Run, which took place at midnight, is one of the healthy initiatives that make up the SPAR FitLive.ie programme and provides families of all fitness levels the opportunity to improve their health and fitness.
