Mourneabbey GAA and Avondhu GAA mourne untimely death of Ted Lenihan

- BY PAT RYAN

THE death occurred on Saturday of Ted Linehan, Lisava, Cahir. The late Ted in his 57th year died while kayaking on the River Suir in Cahir. Ted was an experienced kayaker but got into difficulties while on the river and became separated from his kayak and was brought down stream in the current.

There were glowing tributes from many groups that Mr Linehan was involved with – Cahir Tidy Towns, Cahir GAA, Cahir Golf Club, Cahir Youth Project, Meet & Train Group and the local Canoe club. He was described as a champion of Cahir and the wider community.

All those groups that he was so closely associated with paid tribute to their friend by forming a guard of honour outside Costigan’s Funeral Home on Tuesday evening as huge crowds attended to offer their condolences to his heart broken family. There was also a very large attendance at St Michael’s Church Annaleentha, Mourneabbey the following day for Requiem Mass with burial to nearby Burnfort Cemetery.

The late Ted a native of Mourneabbey, Co Cork, was very well known in sporting circles. He was a member of the Clyda Rovers Junior A Hurling side that won their first ever Avondhu JAHC title in 1985 when they defeated Kilworth after a replay.

He later became a referee and handled many games in the Avondhu Division and later in South Tipperary.

He served as PRO to Cahir GAA Club for a number of years and served for couple of years as Captain Cahir Golf Club.

He was best known for his work as a volunteer who put in tremendous work in enhancing Cahir Town in the Tidy Town’s Competitions. If you wanted something done all you had to do was pick up the phone and ask him. He was also a great family man.

He was a member of the Clyda Rovers Golfing Society and served as Captain and President over the years.

He was a keen supporter of the Mourneabbey Ladies football team and had been to their games all season. He also attended many Clyda Rovers GAA matches over many years.

To his wife Mary, son Fergus, daughters Edel and Emily, sister Ann (Caplice) brothers Jerome and Donal, mother in law, brothers in law, sisters in law, nephews, nieces, relatives neighbours and many friends we tender our sincere sympathy.
