Lots to celebrate and plenty silverware
THE GAA season now coming to a close has proved very fruitful for the club here in Newmarket.
The highlights of the year have seen the Junior B’s at both codes annexing both Duhallow championship titles and reaching county semi-finals, while the hurlers have reached the Duhallow league final against Meelin, with another title in prospect before year’s end.
This year also, the Intermediate footballers won the Tom Creedon Cup and gained promotion to division 2 county league. Eventually, they lost out to St Michael’s in the county semi-final and Aghabullogue denied them in county league final.
At U21 level, Robert Emmets were defeated in the county B final after a great victory in Duhallow football final, while the U21 hurlers will face Millstreet in the Duhallow semi-final this Saturday (at 2pm in Meelin).
So, again, Newmarket teams are still out there vying for further silverware into the dying weeks of the year.
At inter county level, Bart Daly (Junior) and Aidan Browne (Under 21) played football championship with Cork this year.
However, there was dissapointment for our Junior A hurlers who were just denied by Kilbrin in the championship.
The Castle Grounds at Macroom has long proved a favourite venue for our teams and so on March 4 it proved no different as Kevin O’Sullivan led the Intermediate footballers to a glorious 2-14 to 1-11 victory over Ballingeary in the Tom Creedon Cup final. On that same night the club’s annual social was held at Devon Inn and this triumph and others was well celebrated.
March went out like a lion with Robert Emmetts U21 footballers, led by Conor O’Keeffe, pulling off a dramatic 2-10 to 1-11 victory over Millstreet at Rockchapel in the Duhallow final. This side lost out to Kilshannig after going all the way to the county final.
After a 55 year lapse the club won the Duhallow Junior B Hurling Championship title
