Duhallow choral concert filled with festive spirit

- JOHN TARRANT

A traditional concert of seasonal classics and glorious Christmas carols performed by the celebrated Duhallow Choral Society drew a large attendance to St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet.

The Duhallow group has become a vital and integral part of the barony’s cultural community. In a programme filled with a sparkling selection of traditional carols and seasonal songs, there was plenty of opportunities for patrons to join in at this concert supporting Millstreet Community Hospital.

Maintaining a series of stagings prior to the festive calendar peaks, those present for the Millstreet concert immersed themselves in the pre- Christmas spirit with the festive music and favourite carols. Many old favourites won favour such as Hark the Herald Angels Sing, O Holy Night, “12 Days of Christmas to Silent Night. Add in Handel’s iconic Hallelujah Chorus and Ave Maria ensured choral treats for the appreciative audience under conductor Sharon Reidy and accompanist Ian Sexton.

Choir manager Bridget Daly said the group, founded in 1996, promotes music, song and culture in the Duhallow region.

“Over the past two decades the choir have performed far and wide, supporting charity and community initiatives,” she said.

Millstreet Community Hospital matron Margaret Collins thanked all involved on “immersing themselves in the pre Christmas spirit thanks to the Duhallow Choral Society”.

“Such a talented group delivered a wonderful performance in the ideal setting - the Duhallow choir made the occasion,” she said.

“Many thanks to the staff, friends of the hospital and the community for their support, proceeds will assist the hospital - a lot done but more to do in the new year,” she added.

Cullen’s Trish O’Riordan compered the proceedings.
