Munster Club of the Year added to Kanturk GAA’s 2017 title haul

-

KANTURK Chamber of Commerce will hold the annual Christmas market on this Friday, 15th December from 3.30pm to 7pm at Watergate Street.

It promises all the trimmings of Christmas and it will offer a great variety gifts and gift suggestions for everyone. So put the date in your diary. KANTURK GAA Club were selected by the Munster GAA Council as the Club of the Year for 2017.

At the 2017 Munster GAA awards on Saturday last, December 9, at Fota Island Resort, Kanturk team captains Lorcan O’Neill (PIH) and Aidan Walsh (IF) were presented with the award by Munster council chairman Jerry O’Sullivan.

MC on the night was Marty Morrissey from RTE who quizzed both Kanturk team captains on the successes Kanturk have had in winning a Cork county double of Intermediate football and Premier Intermediate hurling championships, along with the Munster IHC crown. With Lorcan O’Neill giving nothing away, Marty retorted: “Have you ever thought of being in politics?”.

Kanturk are the third Cork club to win the Munster Club of the Year award with Nemo Rangers (2000 and 2005) along with Newtownshandrum (2003).

2018 Championship Draws:

Everyone held their breath when the draws for the opening round of the 2018 championship were made and then the news broke that there would be a North Cork derby when Kanturk were paired with North Cork neighbours Newtownshandrum in the opening round of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship. Whoever loses that tie faces the losers of Midleton V Bishopstown in round two to keep their championship aspirations alive. In Premier Intermediate football, Kanturk were paired with Nemo Rangers with the losers facing a date against the losers of Castletownbere V St Vincents to stay in championship 2018. Certainly there is plenty to whet the appetite when the opening round of the championship comes around in April next year.

U21HC:

Kanturk’s U21 hurling championship tie against Dromtariffe fell fowl of the inclement weather over the past weekend and it’s unclear at time of writing whether this Duhallow semi-final tie will be played over the coming weekend or wait until the new year.
