Handball focus is on Munster Senior Championsh­ips

THE main focus this week in the handball courts will be Men’s and Ladies Munster Senior Singles and Doubles championsh­ip and in 40x20 county championsh­ip both adult and juvenile will progress.

Looking first at Munster Senior Championsh­ip, this Friday in Men’s Senior Singles round of 16 there are four games down for decision, all with a 7.30 start. At Cappagh Tagdh O’Neill, Mallow, plays Diarmuid Nash, Clare.

At Mallow in an all Cork clash Brendan Fleming, Ballydesmo­nd will play Daniel Relihan, Liscarroll.

At Broadford David Walsh, Mallow, plays Ger Coonan, Tipperary, while at Ballydesmo­nd Tadgh Carroll, Mallow, will face Kerry’s Jack O’Shea.

On Saturday at Cappagh at 12 noon in a Ladies Senior semi-final, Aishling O’Keeffe, Ballydesmo­nd, plays Martina McMahon, Limerick.

On Saturday four quarter fiinals of Men’s Senior Singles are down for decision all with a 12 noon start. At Cappagh CJ Fitzpatric­k, Limerick, play the winner of Diarmuid Nash v Tadgh O’Neill.

At Mallow Michael Hedigan, Liscarroll, will play the winner of Brendan Fleming v Daniel Relihan.

Broadford will host a double header with Dominic Lynch, Kerry, playing the winner of David Walsh v Ger Coonan. In the second game in Broadford Colin Crehan, Clare, play the winner of Tadgh Carroll v Jack O’Shea.

In County championsh­ip programme on this Thursday at Mallow 6.30 start in Emerald Masters A Doubles Final St Finbarrs/Liscarroll pair John Herlihy/John Hedigan take on Conna’s Chris Hurley and Brendan Hurley.

Also on this Thursday at Liscarroll 7.30 start in Intermedia­te Doubles Final the Liscarroll/ Ballydesmo­nd pairing of Shane Hedigan and Donnacha O’Dea play Mallow’s Tadhg O’Neill and David Walsh.

On Tuesday evening at Liscarroll at 7.30 in Silver Masters B Doubles Final Ballydesmo­nd duo Philip O’Carroll and Paul Kerins play Conna’s Kieran Noonan and Batt Sheehan. In Junior B Doubles quarter-final at Kilworth on Sunday with a 2pm start Conna pair Ian Heffernan and Hugh Carolan play Liscarroll’s Tadhg Jones and Dwayne Sheehan.

At the other side of Junior B Doubles it’s down to a semi-final. In the quarter-finals played last weekend Kilworth pair Michael Dunne and Timmy Dunne defeated Mallow partnershi­p Michael O’Malley and Niall Delany, while in the second quarter-final Boherbue pair Shane Flynn and Roger Casey defeated Mallow’s Eoghan Sheehan and Gearoid O’Connell.

On Sunday last the Munster Primary Schools Inter-County team competitio­ns which were scheduled for Nenagh and Kilcolman fell foul of the weather following overnight snowfall in the area they had to be postponed. They have now been reschedule­d for Sunday, December 17 at the same venues and the same starting time of 10.30am.

There will be plenty of action in Mallow Credit Union Juvenile County championsh­ip over the next two weekends as the different age groups are played down to finals with the programme of Finals scheduled for Mallow on Saturday/ Sunday, January 6/7.

Last weekend at Broadford The Bill Duggan Memorial Invitation­al Tournament was played. In Men’s Doubles Paul Brady and Michael Finnegan made the long journey from Cavan and duly took the spoils.

In Ladies Senior Catriona Casey, Ballydesmo­nd, teamed up with Clare’s Catriona Millane and they went on to take the spoils defeating the Limerick/Mayo combinatio­n of Martina McMahon and Pauline Gallagher.

Liscarroll club are now gearing up for the start of the Tim Healy Memorial Munster Open Boys and Girls U-13 and U-15 Tournament­s which are again being decided in their usual spot December 27 to January 1. It has continued to attracted a huge entry over the years and this looks no different with the huge volume of work which goes into organising it year on year again having to be faced.
