NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR MACROOM PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARDS
NOMINATIONS are currently being sought for the prestigious 2017 Macroom Person of the Year awards.
Now in their seventh year the awards, hosted by former Macroom town councilor Pat Melia through his website www. macroom.ie, are widely regarded as being one of the highlights of the local social calendar.
As in previous years the awards will be split into categories: Junior Sportsperson (U16), Senior Sportsperson, Voluntary Sports Worker and Voluntary Charity Worker.
There will also be an overall Person of the Year award, with the winner following in the footsteps of an illustrious list of previous winners including Macroom woman Breda Duggan, Kathleen O’Shea from Lissarda, Rita O’Sullivan, former Macroom town councillor Pat O’Connell and the current holder, Willie O’Riordan.
Nominations in each category can be submitted to pat@ mymacroom.com or by text to Pat at 087 352 0351 by Friday, January 26.
The names of the nominees will be published online, with the public then asked to vote from the final list.
The winners will be presented with their awards at a glittering gala ceremony in March.
“These awards serve to recognise the often all too unheralded hard work carried out by so many unsung heroes in and around Macroom,” said Mr Melia.
“They are given on the strength of the public vote. So if you feel you know someone who deserves to be recognised for their selfless contribution to their communities, this is a perfect opportunity to highlight them,” he added.
Mr Melia promised the awards night would also throw up a few surprises, with 10 unsuspecting recipients also set to receive accolades on the night.
“If you know someone who has done a good deed but does not fall into the five defined categories they can be nominated for one of the additional awards,” he said.
