THE past year saw Millstreet maintain a positive image with numerous highlights and in the first of a three part series, an appraisal of January, February, March and April is undertaken this week.

JANUARY:

Favourable weathers adds to appeal of New Year’s Day charity swim at the Boeing in aid of Mallow Rescue. Breifne Earley crosses river Blackwater as part of his 500km walk through the Beara Breifne Way.

One of the social calendar highlights sees ladies celebrate Womens Little Christmas in the Wallis Arms Hotel. Coursing Club hosts two day meeting.

Millstreet Community School qualify for the BT Young Scientist Exhibition on a staging in the RDS Dublin. Aubane Social Club take time to acknowledg­e a fund raising venture from one of its familiar hostings, the club’s annual climb to the summit of Mushera Mountain applauded for support of Reach Out Cancer Support Group.

Spring Farm Machinery Show hosted in Green Glens. The Marian Players annual pantomime is a firm fixture in the calendar for those residing either side of the Cork/Kerry county bounds. Their staging of “Sleeping Beauty” added to its reputation in 30th hosting.

There is much regret at the death of Fr. Joe Murphy. Sportsman John Coleman inducted into Cork GAA Hall of Fame by 96/c103FM.

FEBRUARY:

Millstreet Town Park Committee AGM hosted in the Canon O’Donovan Centre. Country Park issues press release indicating closure for 2017 season to public.

Juvenile GAA applauded the achievemen­ts of its sporting heroes at two celebratio­n functions. Win for Dan O’Donoughue bred dog A Bunch of Tools at Nationsal Coursing Meeting.

Slí Gaeltacht Mhúscraí (Muskerry Gaeltacht Way) Ultra Trail Race from Kealkil finishes in Millstreet. Aubane Social Club makes a presentati­on to retired postman Noel Keating.

Munster glory for Millstreet Taekwondo. Honduran coffee producer speaks at Millstreet school on fair trade.

MARCH:

Storm Ewan disrupts traditiona­l old Horse Fair. Youth Amenity, GAA and Youth Amenity Lotto Fund Group report another very successful year. The Lotto is 24 years old and all monies raised have been ploughed back into the community.

Millstreet AC send a large contingent to the last staging of Ballycotto­n 10 Roadrace and creditable performanc­es emerge amongst the 1,800 strong finishers.

TY students present John B Keane comedy “The Buds of Ballybunio­n. Millstreet’s late afternoon Parade on St. Patrick’s Day proved another winner as hundreds lined the pavements wearing sprigs of shamrock and the national colours with Eily Buckley as Grand Marshal.

Cullen and District Friends of the Handicappe­d annual Weigh In reaches successful conclusion. Mothers Day celebrated. Coffee morning supports Daffodil Day.

APRIL:

Millstreet Comhalthas Ceolteoiri Eireann host 36th Annual Feile Cheoil and inaugural Trad Festival. FF Table Quiz in McCarthy’s Bar supports Millstreet Hospital.

Millstreet NS Parents Associatio­n host Table Quiz. Spring Horse Show convenes at Green Glens.

The Irish Mountain Running Associatio­n commence their 2017 programme of activity on a visit to Clara Mountain. Team Millstreet Clean Up begins.

TY students enjoy sleepout. Presentati­on NS receive New Health Promotion Flag.

Vintage Club welcome Blue Force Coastline Tractor Challenge of UK and Ireland. Aubane Social Club host Easter Table Quiz and Black and White Themed Party.

Official opening of new Millstreet Post Office. The annual Easter Commemorat­ion takes place at themonumen­t situated in the Town Square, the 90th anniversar­y of the commemorat­ion with address by Ryle Dwyer.

Vintage Club feature on RTE TV Nationwide as part of Ford Centenary. Ballydaly’s Tim Kiely presented with Hall of Fame by Irish Holstein Freisan Associatio­n.
