Mitchelsto­wn miss out to Kanturk in intermedia­te

IN the County IFC three neighbouri­ng clubs from the Division competed: Mitchelsto­wn, Glanworth, and Kildorrery.

Incidental­ly all three were beaten by Kanturk on their way to County glory. In all 20 clubs competed, there were 40 matches including three replays and relegation games.

Kildorrery were first into the action when they played Glanmire with the Avondhu side winning by 3-13 to 1-13. Kanturk had a 2-15 to 1-13 win over Mitchelsto­wn with Glanworth accounting for Douglas by 2-11 to 1-5. Glanworth lined out as follows

Ciaran Cotter, Bart O’Keeffe, Eric O’Donoghue, John Blackburne, Bill Sheehan, Philip Blackburne, William Blackburne, Robert O’Driscoll 0-1, Ross Murphy, Diarmuid Colfer 0-1, Ger O’Neill 0-1 Emmet Sheehan 0-2, Shane O’Riordan 2-3 (0-2f) Martin Jackson, Michael Sheehan 0-3. Kildorrerr­y and Glanworth who won their first rounds were through to Round 2A. In Round 2A Kildorrery beat Glenville in Castlelyon­s by 1-12 to 0-11 while Glanworth accounted for Millstreet 2-15 to 1-6.

Mitchelsto­wn were in Round 2B. In that game they had a huge win over Adrigole by 2-21 to 0-10. Mitchelsto­wn were now in Round 3. They faced a number of Duhallow teams.

Their first outing was against Millstreet where ‘Town’ won by 1-13 to 0-11. Kildorrery who received a bye to the quarter final accounted for St Finbarr’s by 0-13 to 0-9, Mitchelsto­wn played Ballydesmo­nd with the game finishing all square after a good rally by Ballydesmo­nd 1-14 each.

In the replay Mitchelsto­wn had a twelve point win 2-19 to 1-10. Glanworth now faced Kanturk in the County semi final. Played in bad weather conditions in Buttevant Kanturk had a goal to spare 1-7 to 0- 7.

Mitchelsto­wn’s quarter final game was against Rockchapel. After leading all through ‘Town’ were forced to hold off a brave ‘Rock’ finish to emerge winners by 1-11 to 2- 6. The semi finals were now ready with Kanturk defeating Kildorrery by 0-18 to 2- 6.

The Kildorrery team lined out as follows: Liam Kelly, Sean Kelly, Eamon O’Connor, Fintan Daly, Finbarr Stapleton, Cormac O’Baoill, Will Coffey, Shane Fitzgerald 0-1, Andrew O’Brien, James O’Sullivan 1-0, Peter O’Brien, Jerry McCarthy, Shane O’Neill 1-4 Tom Monaghan 0 1 Stephen Coughlan Subs: Darren McNamara for Fintan Daly, Dylan Kent for Will Coffey, William Fouhy for Jerry McCarthy, Richie McEniry for Stephen Coughlan.

Mitchelsto­wn had a surprise win over Cill na Marthra in their county semi-final by 2-13 to 1-10. Cill na Marthra won the County Division 2 FL and their Under 21 A footballer­s reached the county final where Douglas beat them by 2-11 to 2- 6.

The county final in Pairc Ui Rinn produced a great game with Mitchelsto­wn looking like winners when ahead by two points by the 53rd minute.

A great Kanturk rally saw them score five points in a row to emerge County champions by 0-14 to 0-13.

In the process Kanturk recorded County quarter final, semi final and County final wins over the three Avondhu sides in that County championsh­ip.
