ATHELETIC CLUB NOTES

Last weekend saw the first championship events of 2018. The occasion was the Munster Juvenile Combined Events and Junior and Under 23 Individual Championships and which were held in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. Attendance was down a little, but the competition was good. We at Lisscarroll A.C. had a number of athletes in action in both types of competition. On Saturday Aoife O’Sullivan, Orlaith O=92 Sullivan, Anna Kellegher, Irene Kellegher, Isobel Kellegher, Angelina Mason, Jordan Mason were in action. It is gratifying to know that these athletes and their parents, turns out at Christmas holiday time to compete in athletics. Of those who travelled two were lucky enough to win medals. Aoife O’Sullivan under 15 won bronze in the combined events, as did Anna Kellegher at under 17, having had to compete in events that they would not have been used to. All athletes did exceptionally well in their regular events, showing signs that they are preparing well for individual championships. Sunday was individual day for Vickie Cusack and Anna Kellegher in Junior events, while Johnny Murphy was our lone combined events athlete. As things worked out Anna Kellegher was our gold medal winner in the 800m. this was her first Munster Indoor win and is all the more remarkable that it is a Junior Medal. Well Done Anna. Vickie Cusack also at Junior level was in her first competition since last October, she won silver in the Shot Put and bronze in the Long Jump. Johnny Murphy won silver in the under 13 combined events. Just a couple of points behind the winner. Anyone who competed deserved our applause and congratulations and hopefully they will build on the experience going forward. For them and everyone else it is back to the training routine: Schedule- (all times at 6:30pm) Mondays- in Liscarroll for under 9 to under 12. Tuesdays: in Liscarroll for under 1 and older. Thursdays: Little Athletics in Liscarroll. Fridays: In Charleville for ALL ATHLETES. There are only a few weeks to the first of the Munster Juvenile Championships and from watching athletes compete at the weekend, some of ours have a lot to do to catch up. The biggest problem to being prepared is that many teenagers believe that they are as good as they were last year, but are they as fit as they were. To be a good athlete, training and staying fit never takes a holiday. FIXTURES–Sunday 14thMunster Senior and Masters Indoor. Saturday 20th- A.A.I. Combine events- Athlone.
