Poignant moments at 30th annual senior citizens party on Sunday
THE annual senior citizens party was a huge success last weekend.
Well over 100 people attended the four hour event last Sunday affternoon at the Mallow Social Services Centre. This event has taken place annually for over 30 years and for the past 14 years it has been organised by both the Social Services Centre and Mallow Gardai, spearheaded by Garda John O’Leary and Garda Liam Doyle.
Last Sunday’s party was in some ways a nostalgic event as Garda Liam retires from the force next month after serving the Mallow community with distinction for over 30 years. There were glowing tributes for the popular community Garda on social media and Social Services chairman Richard Dempsey made a special presentation to both Liam and his wife at last Sunday’s gathering.
Several other Garda colleagues were present to mark the occasion and to acknowledge his community work with both young and old over many years.
On the day music, dancing and a meal was available to all and the caake was jointly cut by three of the oldest guests present in the form of Molly Lenihan, Michael O’Sullivan and Mallow Red Cross legend Ma Sheahan.
In his address, Social Services chairman Richard Dempsey thanked Rev Eithne Lynch, Canon Casey, Canon O’Brien, colleagues Michael Stubbs, Damien Murphy, Johnny Bottles Griffin, Stella O’Sullivan, Cook Sheila Griffin and her staff, Eoghan Kenny and the youth helpers and the musicians for making the afternoon such a success.
