Glittering night as St Peter’s present awards
YOUNG footballers from St. Peter’s GAA Club were honoured at a medals presentation event in Freemount Community Centre last Saturday night.
Hurler and footballer John McLoughlin took time out from training for Kanturk’s upcoming All-Ireland semi-final to present the medals to the winning teams.
Teams from the ages of under 6 to under 21 from the parishes of Freemount, Rockchapel and Meelin line out for St. Peter’s Club, which was formed in 2005 when Freemount joined the combination due to the declining population of the area, similar to most other rural clubs.
In 2017 St. Peter’s fielded teams in U6 and U8 blitzes, U10 Go Games, U12 leagues, and U14 - U18 teams in both league and championship under the aspect of Rebel Óg North. The club also entered an U15 team which won the 13-a-side Cork County completion, defeating Muintir na nGael in the final on September 8 in Macroom on a score line of 8-7 to 3-9.
The U12 team also won their section of the Rebel Óg North league when on 22nd June in Churchtown they defeated Milford in a thrilling and tense final on a scoreline of 6-6 to 3-10.
The minor footballers qualified for the County Section of the championship before being defeated at the semi-final stage by Cill na Martra.
St. Peter’s is now planning for the year ahead with an upcoming AGM and members hope to bring further success to the area and, more importantly, give local kids the opportunity to play football and to further develop their skills.
