Savour a night of pure vocal magic with the Voice Squad

- BILL BROWNE

CRITICALLY acclaimed Irish a cappella trio The Voice Squad will play a rare live concert at the Ballymaloe Grainstore on Sunday, March 4.

Comprised of tenors Phil Callery, Fran McPhail and bass Gerry Cullen, The Voice Squad’s harmonic singing style is something of a departure from the Irish traditional music that they performed as individuals.

That style has been often been compared to the great English family groups The Watersons and The Copper Family and while the trio would have been influenced by both groups, their strongest influences have come directly from traditional Irish airs.

The Voice Squad’s combination of stunning vocals, unique arrangements of well-known songs and easy charm has made them into one of the most distinctive unaccompanied singing groups of modern times.

This has been mirrored by their popularity both and home and abroad with the band performing for former Irish president Mary McAleese, performing at the opening of the Special Olympics in Ireland and playing sold out concerts across Ireland, Europe and the US.

In addition to releasing three albums of their own, the group is much in demand as studio session musicians, adding their vocal textures and melodic colour to the recordings of other artists across different genres.

These have included Elvis Costello, The Chieftains, Sinead O’Connor, the late Christie Hennessey and Van Morrison to name just a few.

Tickets for their eagerly anticipated concert in the East Cork venue are available from www. eventbrite.ie priced at €32.55.
