No luck for Macroom FC in National Cup
NATIONAL Cup Weekend:
ANOTHER historic achievement for Macroom FC as the U14 and U16 teams qualified out of Cork and into the ‘open’ National draw for the first time ever.
While the U16s had home advantage against Quigley’s Point Swifts FC from the Inishowen League in Donegal, they narrowly missed out, losing 2-1. QPS got off to a great start with an early score and scored just before half-time. Macroom’s goal came from a Patrick Barry free-kick in off the post and while the home side had the majority of possession in the closing stages they just couldn’t find the equaliser.
THE U14s were beaten by Meath side Kells Blackwater 5-1. Macroom had several good shots saved and their goal came from Conor Kelleher who ran past five or six players to finish in the net.
U14A League: Carrigaline 1 Macroom A 5: The U14A team travelled away and picked up three valuable points.
The opening exchanges were evenly balanced but Macroom broke the deadlock just before half tine, Liam Holland with a smart finish. This goal opened up the game and Macroom gave a much improved performance after the break.
Further goals from Rory Duggan, Ben Lyons and a Ben Herlihy free kick made the game safe. Duggan then got his second to round off the victory while Carrigaline got a late consolation. Another excellent result in which all 14 players contributed.
U16 Premier: Blarney Utd 0 Macroom 3: Macroom took the spoils with another outstanding win at a cold and wet O’Shea Park. The visitors were 0-1 ahead at half-time through Daniel Cotter, after Bradley O’Shea and Eoin Guiney had combined well.
The second goal arrived soon after half time when JK Long struck an unstoppable volley from long range. Macroom now had their tails up and the points were made safe when Patrick Barry blasted to the roof of the net. The U16s are now sitting mid table with three wins and one draw from six Premier league games.
