Johnny wins his first major darts tournament
SATURDAY, January 20 was a day to remember for Johnny Palmer from Shanballymore in the Clockhouse Dart Tournament.
Palmer, who had never won a major darts tournament before, spent weeks preparing for this event and it paid off.
His skill and dedication combined with long hours of practice in Pat Mac’s bar in Castletownroche saw him beating some of the best dart talent around.
Palmer beat Adrian Holmes then came out on top in a close encounter with fellow Shanballymore man Peter O’Donovan. He went on to beat Steve Connolly and then overcame Ken Lomasney in the semi-final.
Palmer’s final act was to beat the Klaus Richter, a German born dart star playing for Maureen’s Bar, in Mallow.
In the final both players looked nervous and after two legs it was even at one a piece.
Palmer, like a bull terrier, gritted his teeth and started playing with style, hitting good scores and finishing at ease. Palmer won 5-3 and in his speech praised Richter for a good game.
Well done to Johnny Palmer and all those who took part in the tournament; it was a great night of darts.
