Good forward momentum in girls rugby in Mallow

-

THE Mallow U/15 rugby girls team had a very good win away to Tralee RFC in the first round of the Cup campaign.

In what was rated as one of their best team performances of the season to date by the team’s coaches, they ran out worthy winners by a score of 41 to 17. Playing away from home in what was a challenging start to the cup campaign, solid performances from both forwards and backs laid the foundations for some excellent scores.

Several of the Mallow players got onto the score sheet, indicating a strong collective effort by all the girls. Eimear Keane scored three tries over the course of the game and Sophie O’Connell scored two tries. Louise Riardon and Kate Thornton also contributed by scoring a try each. Rounding out the scoring, kicker Caoimhe O ’Riardon contributed three conversions.

The girls next opponents for round two of the cup will confirmed when the other first round fixtures are completed.

The U/13s, U/15s and U/18s girls practice on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7pm to 8.30pm at the rugby pitch in the town park (across road from Tesco’s) and the club are always looking for new girls to ‘give it a try’.

In other news, the girls minis (6 to 12 years old) first ‘open session’ was held last Saturday at Carokeal and saw several girls come out to rugby for the first time and participate in some non-contact games as well as learning passing skills in the first half of the session.

The second half of the session focused on helping the new girls learn how to tackle properly. The ‘veterans’ on the team from last season were paired up with the new girls to help coach them so that they learned how to tackle effectively and safely.

The Minis Girls open sessions will continue on a number of Saturdays in February and girls would need to have football boots as the sessions are outdoors on a grass pitch. Mouth guards are optional but can be brought if available.

The is no charge to participate so bring your daughter to have some fun and give rugby a try.

For information on the next open session for girls aged 6 to 12 years contact Freddie at 0879805951 or ftf21262@gmail.com.

The first blitzes for the new year will take place in February. Practices are scheduled for Saturdays from 10am to 11am at Carokeal pitches so please contact Freddie if your daughter would like to give rugby a try, learn new skills and make new friends.

The schools fun rugby programme continued this week with the second visit to the Gaelscoil and third visit to St. Mary’s convent where the kids learned how to form scrums and set up lineouts.

The schools fun rugby programme is run in conjunction with Munster rugby and consists of visits to local primary schools to provide noncontact fun rugby sessions and will culminate in a blitz for participating schools later in the year.
