- BILL BROWNE

HIGH achieving students from 26 second-level schools across Cork have been honoured for their hard work and outstanding results in their Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied (LCA) exams.

Almost 100 medals and certificates of commendation were handed out to students by the Cork Education and Training Board (CETB) at a special awards ceremony held at the Rochestown Park Hotel.

Each of the 26 schools and colleges, many from the north and mid- Cork regions, also identified one stand-out student who not only reached their academic potential, but also gave outstanding commitment to their school community, with prestigious Student of the Year awards.

Top achievers included Ian O’Sullivan from Coláiste Treasa in Kanturk, Alex Finn from Coláiste Choilm in Ballincollig and Saoirse Ní Bhriain from Coláiste Ghobnatan in Baile Mhic Ire who were among eight pupils to receive the Board Award for achieving 613 points in their * Coláiste Treasa (Kanturk) - Lisa McAuliffe.

The awards evening was attended by students, proud parents and staff, with music by the Crescendo Quartet comprised of Davis College, Mallow students Robert and James Dunne, Kate Thompson and Ashling Cronin providing the ideal accompaniment .

Speaking on the night CETB chief executive Ted Owens praised all of the award recipients for their diligence and dedication over the years leading up to their final exams.

Mr Owens also acknowledged the support of parents, guardians and staff in assisting the students to “achieve their ambitions.”

“These awards are pivotal in acknowledging the surplus of great minds and talent that we have here in Cork and is essential that we give back to the students, albeit in some small manner, for the effort they put into achieving these amazing results,” said Mr Owens.

“2017 has echoed the strength of previous years, but it was in particular a very strong year for academic achievement. This awards ceremony gives the Board and staff of CETB the opportunity to recognise the students, and their teachers who guide their students to reach their maximum potential,” he added.
