Charleville boxers most successful in Cork in 2017
CHARLEVILLE Boxing Club was honoured by the Cork Ex Boxer’s Association last week when they presented the North Cork club with a plaque marking the fact that Charleville’s boxers had won the most trophies in Cork County than any other club in 2017.
Tim O’Sullivan, president; J. J. Murphy, chairman, Bernard O’Connor and Mick O’Brien of the ex-boxer’s club travelled to Charleville on last Monday night to present the plaque to the chairman and coach of Charleville at their training rooms in the local GAA Centre at Baker’s Road, Charleville.
“We are delighted to be here to congratulate Charleville on being the most successful club in Cork County last year. This is a wonderful achievement and I congratulate the club and everybody connected with it on this outstanding success,” said Mick O’Brien.
He then presented the plaque to Brendan O’Donovan, club chairman and club coach Tommy O’Donnell and club founder Garda Nick Phelan, who accepted it on behalf of the 35 strong membership.
Boxers from the Charleville club won 17 titles at county, Munster and All-Ireland level last year. These consisted of ten Cork County titles, six Munster titles and one All-Ireland title.
They also had four finalists at various levels in the All-Ireland championship competitions.
The visitors were welcomed to the club by founder Garda Nick Phelan who thanked the Cork Ex Boxer’s Association for nominating Charleville as the recipients of their prestigious award for 2017.
He paid tribute to his committee and the coaches who prepare the young boxers for the various competitions at the different weight levels, and thanked the boxers themselves for their commitment to training. He said they deserve all the success they achieve, and he wished them further success in the future.
He also thanked the ladies of the club for their assistance and support in the running of the club.
