Mitchelsto­wn CBS hold out for deserved win

Mitchelsto­wn CBS 1-9 Abbey CBS Tipperary 1-7

MITCHELSTO­WN CBS had a close win over Abbey CBS in the Munster Senior B FC quarter-final at Tipperary on Wednesday where the cross wind favoured the winners slightly in the first half.

An early free by Niall Heffernan found Adam McGrath who was fouled. McGrath pointed the free. CBS hit the front in the 8th minute when Cathal O’Mahony goaled giving the Cork side a lead they held throughout. Further pressure yielded a point by Mark Keane. Cathal Harrington followed with a 17th minute point. In the 22nd minute Cathal O’Mahony pointed a free.

Good play by Mark Keane led to a Tomas Vaughan point as CBS moved 1-4 to 0-1 ahead. Abbey CBS rallied well. Jack Downey pointed a free and Niall Heffernan and Brian Barlow placed Edmund O’Dwyer for a point. Christy English pointed a CBS free as the winners led 1-5 to 0-3 at the break.

For the second half CBS introduced James Keating on the edge of the square with Cathal O’Mahony moving out field as an extra attacker. Abbey had five wides in quick succession and they had to wait till the 38th minute when Edmund O’Dwyer pointed. Abbey tagged on another point by O’Dwyer who cut the lead to a goal.

It took Mitchelsto­wn till the 43rd minute for their opening score of this half a free by Cathal O’Mahony. Abbey replied with a free by Jack Downey. CBS made a number of attacks with James Keating breaking some good ball. Mark Keane kicked a point and CBS were four clear. Abbey got back within a goal in the 49th minute when Aidan Griffin pointed.

CBS finished strong – Cathal O’Mahony kicked a great point. They moved five points clear in the 56th minute when a quick free by Mark Keane to Christy English found Cathal O’Mahony for the insurance point. In injury-time Abbey made some daring raids on the CBS backline.

The winners defence held firm but conceded a late penalty. Jack Downey converted with the final whistle following the kickout.
