Adult and juvenile 40x20 Munster Championship continues
THERE is no let up in playing activity in handball courts as 40x20 Munster Championship adult and juvenile continues to gather momentum.
In adult championship on this Thursday at Conna with a 7.30 start Katie Fleming, Boherbue, plays Aoife Landers, Waterford, in Ladies junior Singles semi-final.
On Friday at Mallow 7.30 start Mallow player Ray Norris plays Limerick’s Tom O’Brien in Diamond Masters A Singles quarter-final. Also on Friday in Galbally at 7.30 Hugh Carolan, Conna, plays Clare’s Glen Murray in Junior B Singles semi-final.
On Sunday at Cashel at 1pm Jamie O’Donnell, Fermoy, plays the winner of Kieran Neelan, Limerick, against Brian O’Brien, Tipperary.
On Monday in Conna at 7.30 Ryan Harkin, Mallow, plays Tipperary’s Daniel Hayes in Junior Singles semi-final. Also on Monday in Ballymacelligott at 7.30 in Masters A Singles Final Denis Quinn, Ballydesmond, plays Dominic Lynch, Kerry.
On Tuesday at Ballyporeen 7.30 Anna Dunne, Kilworth, plays Brigid Quish, Limerick, in Ladies Junior B singles semi-final.
On Wednesday at Cappagh at 7.30 Michael Hedigan, Liscarroll, plays Conor Cooney, Clare, in Intermediate singles semi-final.
In Munster 40x20 Juvenile championship first round games Cork players face a stiff test against Tipperary at Tipperary venues on Friday evening and Sunday. Our Compunet IT Solutions sponsored players have put a lot of work into their preparation over the past few months and will be hoping to get some positive results against what is also a strong Tipperary line up.
The action will start on Friday at Newport at 7pm with three games down for decision starting with U-15 Doubles in which Kealin Murphy, Ballydesmond, teams up with Gearoid Healy, Liscarroll, to play Tipperary pair Nathan Lenihan and Adam Fogarty. That will be followed by U-17 singles in which Michael O’Callaghan, Liscarroll, will carry Cork hopes when he faces Mikey Ryan. The last game is U-17 Doubles in which Liscarroll pair Luke Barrett and Colin Healy play Eoin Healy and Jack Foley.
On Sunday Cork players will be involved at Newport and Nenagh at 11am. Newport have a twogame programme starting with U-14 Doubles in which Fermoy player Hayden Supple will play Tipperary John Ryan. The second game is U-14 Doubles in which Ballydesmond pair Eoin Daly and John Cronin will play Jack Mullaney and Eoin Carroll.
Nenagh host three games starting with Girls U-14 singles in which Grainne O’Connell, Ballydesmond, plays Tipperary’s Avril Dooley. Then in U-15 Singles Cathal Ducey, Boherbue, plays Rory Grace. The last game will be the U-16 Doubles in which Stevie O’Donnell, Fermoy, teams up with Donal Jones, Liscarroll, to play Jack McGrath and Conor O’Dwyer.
Last weekend the Munster 40x20 Second Level Colleges Championship was decided at Mallow and Liscarroll where these Cork players were successful - First Year Singles: Cathal Ducey, Boherbue Comprehensive; Intermediate Singles: Cian O’Driscoll, Patrician Academy, Mallow; Girls First Year Singles: Sarsh Walsh, St Marys, Mallow; Girls Senior Doubles: Laura Hayes and Anna Dunne, Loretto, Fermoy.
Cork GAA Handball Board held their annual presentation function at Mallow GAA Complex on Saturday last marking a very successful 2017. A presentation was made to all players, adult and juvenile, who were successful at international, national and provincial level in 2017.
The following were honoured for their outstanding achievements and contribution to handball in the county in 2017 - Ladies Player of the Year: Catriona Casey, Ballydesmond;
Male Player of the Year: Tadhg O’Neill, Mallow; Girls Player of the Year: Aoife Hurley, Conna:
Boys Juvenile Player of the Year joint-winners: Niall Delany and Stephen O’Rourke, Mallow;
Official of the Year: Cork GAA Handball Board Secretary Margaret Walsh; Coach of the Year: Tony Healy, Ballydesmond.
