Students support pilgrimage

-

FOUR 5th Year students from Millstreet Community School will be participating as helpers in a pilgrimage to Lourdes for a week this Easter. Denise Healy, Aoife O’Riordan, Grace O’Connor and Ciara Manning are travelling with the Irish Pilgrimage Trust.

The cost of their travel and accommodation is €670/person and the hope is that they’ll be able to cover these costs through fundraising efforts. There are two forthcoming events, a bake sale in Millstreet Parish Centre on Saturday, February 10, after 6.30pm Mass and on Sunday, February 11, after 11.30am Mass.

That’s followed by a table quiz in The Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday, February 23, commencing at 8pm. A table of four at the quiz costs €40.

There will be a raffle during the table quiz and, for the second year, Patrick O’Leary has kindly donated some items as prizes. Mr. O’Leary whose hometown is Louisville, Kentucky, has strong connections with Millstreet – his great grandfather John Patrick O’Leary was born in Millstreet and is a close relative to Séan Radley.

Most of the items donated have an equestrian theme, which highlights another link between Millstreet and Louisville. The Kentucky Derby has been run for the last 143 years at the Churchill Downs racetrack, which is 15 miles from Mr O’Leary’s home. The students are most grateful for his support towards their fundraising efforts from 3,000 miles away.
