AWBEG MACRA
Last Saturday night, Awbeg Macra’s senior debating team of Niall O’Regan, Niamh Curran, Breda O’Keeffe and Kate O’Regan emerged victorious from a closely fought debate against Donoughamore Macra. In Glaunthaune, for this second round of the national competition, Awbeg successfully proposed that ‘Owning a house will not be a realistic prospect for the majority of people born from 2000 onwards’. They progress to the National Quarter-Final against Knockraha Macra on the February 10, when they will propose ‘That the HSE should be abolished’.
Awbeg Macra members attended the 50th Anniversary Ball of the founding of Banteer Macra in the Killarney Heights Hotel, last Saturday. There, they joined with over 300 other guests to celebrate Banteer Macra’s great achievement by enjoying a fourcourse meal and then, dancing into the small hours – ably led by the band ‘The Kelts’.
This week is a hectic one for Awbeg Macra as pertinacious preparations continue for the FBD Macra na Feirme National Capers Final, which will be held in Mallow, on February 3 in Mallow Youth Centre. Awbeg’s show ‘Hit Us With Your Best Shot’ is a lively mixture of traditional Irish song and dance, pop classics and their own particular brand of comedy. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are €15, but Macra members who present a Macra.
Card, students and OAPs pay just €13. Children go free.
Awbeg Macra’s annual club fundraiser, the Stag of Avondhu, which will be held on Saturday, March 3. This great night out is the culmination of Awbeg’s efforts to find Cork’s most eligible bachelor. More details will be released over the coming weeks.
There’s a lot in store over the coming weeks. Awbeg Macra will be competing in the national final of Capers on February 3. They will be attending the Freemount Macra quiz on February 9. They will be competing in the regional Basketball competition on Sunday, February 11, and they will be attending the Cork County round of Titles on February 16.

Buttevant, Churchtown, Doneraile, Killavullen and is open to absolutely everyone aged 17 to 35 who is looking to meet new people and have fun. Their main areas of activity include sport, travel, community involvement, performing arts, agriculture and public speaking – but they are liable to try anything.

The lotto of a cool €4,000 last Tuesday night was not won, and rolls on. Numbers drawn – 4, 13 and 22 – No Winner. Membership for all aspects of the club is now due for 2018, and the club would be gracious if persons will pay the appropriate fee to any committee member, or make arrangement to pay directly, to the membership officer John O’Donovan, at 086 3934232.
Juvenile membership is collected through the juvenile registration process and the players pay their membership to the team managers.
For the general public, the rates for 2018 are as follows: Full Adult membership – Working – €50. Student/OAP – €30.
