‘LOVE HUNGRY FARMER’ AT THE EVERYMAN

THE Everyman Palace hotel will host a threenight run of the Patrick Talbot Production­s award-winning staging of John B Keane’s classic play ‘ The Love Hungry Farmer’, from next Monday.

Starring Des Keogh, arguably one of Ireland’s finest actors and entertaine­rs, the play tells the story of John Bosco McLaine a bachelor of indetermin­ate ‘ age who is, according to his own assessment “past his best.”

The play, which details his amorous adventures that range from the hilarious to the pitiful, has played to packed audiences in Ireland, the UK, the Australia and the US, with the New York Times describing it as “fiercely serious and bruisingly hilarious.”

CORK’S TOP SHOWBAND STARS AT THE INEC

SOME of the most iconic names from the Leeside showband genre will take to the stage of the INEC in Killarney this coming Saturday for a night of pure musical nostalgia.

Having played to sell-out audiences in Cork and Kerry last year, ‘Rolling Back the Years – The Legends of the Cork Showband Era, is returning to Killarney by popular demand.

Among those to grace the stage of the venue for the shows will be Art Supple with a full seven-piece band, Tony Stevens, Terry McCarthy of Dixies fame, the Johnny ‘ The Golden Trumpet Man’ Carroll and Sandy Kelly who has been wooing audiences across Ireland and the UK with her tribute show to the Greta Patsy Cline.

HOT GUITARS ON FIRE AT COUGHLAN’S LIVE

THE popular Cork blues band Hot Guitars will play a free gig at Coughlan’s live on Saturday night.

Since coming together more than two decades ago the five-piece band has been a regular attraction at venues and festivals across cork and Munster, with their rock style popular with both young and older audiences.

Their repertoire blends together different styles, producing note perfect covers of songs by artists including The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and Chuck Berry.

Their recently released CD ‘Live at the Mills’ perfectly captures the sound and atmosphere of a Hot Guitars live show, an experience that is guaranteed to leave audiences baying for more.

RUBYHORSE SET TO SPARKLE AT CYPRUS AVE

PERENNIAL Cork favourites Rubyhorse will delight fans once more when they play a gig amid the intimate surroundin­gs of Cork’s Cyprus Avenue on Saturday night.

The band has been working on fresh material over the past 12-months, with new tracks set to be released over the coming months. These will be supported by gigs at home and in the US in the spring and summer.

Originally formed in 1988, the band has enjoyed success both at home and in the US where they had a top 20 billboard hit with ‘Sparkle’.

A Rubyhorse live show is always a special occasion and with the band set to showcase some of their new material, this promises to be another magical night.

ECLECTIC SOUNDS WITH DAITHI AT DE BARRA’S

Musician and producer Daithi, best known for creating electronic music inspired by Irish culture, will play a gig at De Barra’s in Clonakilty on Friday night.

Primarily a fiddle player, Daithi mixes this HERE’S OUR TOP TEN THINGS TO DO IN CORK THIS WEEK with beats and effects adding an extra layer to traditiona­l Irish music to produce a sound that is truly unique and different.

His critically acclaimed 2013 debut album ‘In Flight’, featuring the Meteor Award nominated track ‘Chameleon Life’, proved to be a huge boost to his fledgling career and in addition to releasing further solo singles he is also much in demand as a producer working with acts including Fight Like Apes and All Tvvins.

EAT AND BE MERRY WITH MONGOOSE IN COBH

THE supper series at the Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh will continue on Friday night with an evening of top quality cuisine followed by a concert in the company of Dublin-based fourpiece Mongoose.

Combining the vocals, instrument-playing and song-writing of a quartet of Ireland’s finest young female artists, Mongoose create rich a dynamic musical landscape through their idiosyncra­tic blend of harmonic led folk and hard-edged indie pop.

Their style has been constantly evolving since the 2015 release of their debut album, with the group’s live performanc­es a melting pot of music that has earned them critical acclaim from music fans and industry insiders.

SCHUBERT’S SONATAS AT THE TRISKEL CENTRE

ACCLAIMED Cork pianist Fionnuala Moynihan will make a welcome return to the Triskel Christchur­ch Arts Centre at lunchtime on Friday when she will perform the first concert of the venues ‘Schubert’s Completed Piano Sonatas’ series.

The series, which comes on the heels of the Triskel’s popular 2017 Mozart series, will incorporat­e five monthly recitals at the venue featuring some of Schubert’s most loved works. Friday’s concert will feature his Sonatas D 664 (in A major) and D 958 (in C minor).

“To perform such monumental works on such a beautiful piano at the Triskel Arts Centre in my native Cork City is a great honour and I feel very fortunate to have been given this opportunit­y,” said Fionnuala.

TOP DUBLINERS TRIBUTE ACT TO PLAY IN KILWORTH

THE stage of the intimate Village Arts Centre in Kilworth will play host to ‘All for Me Grog’ - The Songs and Story of the Dubliners’ on Friday evening.

Performed by The Liberties, the show perfectly replicates the music of Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Barney McKenna, Ciaran Burke and John Sheahan using the exact same instrument­s.

The band, fronted by Wayne Wilder whose voice and looks bear an uncanny likeness to Ronnie Drew, take audiences on a magical trip through The Dubliners best loved songs including ‘Seven Drunken Nights’, The Irish Rover’ and ‘McAlpine’s Fusilier’s’.

VARIETY FUNDRAISER AT ST MARY’S IN DONERAILE

A VARIETY fundraisin­g concert featuring a wealth of talented artists will take place in St Mary’s Church of Ireland , Doneraile on Friday, February 9 at 8pm.

The concert will feature performanc­es by the acclaimed Cahirmee Singers, the Nagle Rice School Choir tenor Michael O’Keeffe, soprano Eileen Hannon, Philip Cotter (uileann pipes) & Noel Fitzgibbon (banjo) and the Gentlemen of the St Fin Barre’s Choir.

The evening, which will be compeered by Gabriel O’Callaghan, will also include a sing-along session led by Edward Winter.

Proceeds from the concert will go to the St Mary’s Church restoratio­n fund.

TWO NIGHTS WITH ‘HIS GRACE ‘ AT OPERA HOUSE

LEGENDARY comedian, actor and all round raconteur Brendan Grace will bring his hilarious stand-up show to the cork Opera House on Friday and Saturday night.

Perhaps the greatest Irish comedian of his, or indeed any other generation, Grace has stood at the very pinnacle of his profession for more than four decades.
