Macroom’s U16 ladies’ team currently sit top of their section in the Mid- Cork ladies Football League having started the 2018 season with a comprehensive 14-12 to 1-6 victory over Carrigaline’s A team. 2017 was their second year in a row winning the Mid–Cork league and they had the distinction of finishing both the 2016 and 2017 seasons unbeaten.
This team have been together for several years and have always represented the club with great distinction, these girls’ success and effort has definitely opened the door to a lot of other girls as the registration figures for the coming year are the highest ever.
The U13 team had great success in 2017 also, reaching the Mid- Cork Final and the Minor team also reached the Mid- Cork Semi-Finals so the club had their most successful year to date in 2017.
Macroom Ladies Football Club is very proud to have three club members on Cork county panels where at Minor level they are represented by Katie Dineen and at U16 we are represented by Aoife Twomey and Erika O’Shea. For such a small club to have three of its members representing their county is a great achievement and a source of great pride for the club and gives our younger ladies their role models and they train and play safe in the knowledge that they too could represent their county in the future.
Macroom Ladies Football Club strives to be at the forefront of promoting ladies football and sport in general to the youth of Macroom.
Ladies Football in Macroom began in 1994 where some Macroom ladies formed a Junior team and they enjoyed great success in their first year by reaching the County Final. At the time ladies football operated under the overall GAA umbrella and the ladies were supported by the Macroom GAA Club until the formation of the LGFA, when players and club reps nationally felt they needed their own organisation. This led to the formation of Macroom ladies Football Club as part of the new LGFA.
Recently the club has enjoyed great success with expansion down to U8 and U10 up to Minor and this year the club has started a very strong Junior team and will compete at all levels.
In 2017 the club hosted the Mid- Cork U15 Development Academy training in Tom Creedon Park which saw players from all over the Mid- Cork come to Macroom to receive instruction from top county and club coaches and was a great success.
With a strong organising committee, dedicated coaches and mentors, the club has gone from strength to strength since its inception and are looking forward to 2018 in anticipation of another very successful year.
