Congratulations to Daniel O’Leary from Mourneabbey, a member of the Limerick Polocrosse Club, who has been selected to represent Ireland in polocrosse in the U/21 test series in Mooi River in South Africa on March 23.

Daniel, a second year Archaeology student at UCC, is one of a team of eight, four men and four women, and is the only member of the squad from Cork. Last July he was part of a winning polocrosse team which was crowned 2017 Champions at the European Challenge in Doncaster.

The team to travel to South Africa are Luke Brandon (Dublin), Paddy Flavin ( Waterford), Ben Darcy ( Wicklow), Izzy Alken (Dublin), Lauren O’Malley (Dublin), Georgina Spillane (Dublin) and Ella Quinlan ( Waterford). Polocrosse is a team sport that is played all over the world and is a combination of polo and lacrosse.

It is played outside, on a field (the pitch), on horseback. Each rider uses a cane stick to which is attached a racquet head with a loose, thread net, in which the ball is carried. The ball is made of sponge rubber and is approximately four inches across.

The objective is to score goals by throwing the ball between the opposing team’s goal posts.

This unique sport originated in Australia in 1939 and is dubbed as the ‘King of the One Horse Sports’. Polocrosse is governed by the International Polocrosse Council (IPC), is currently played in 18 countries and boasts over 10,000 players worldwide.
