Deciding on the best care for your child

-

WITH so many reputable child care facilities now opening their doors, choosing the best one for your child is becoming more and more difficult.

From local community centres to private crèches, from Naíonras to Montessori, parents can be confident that a broad spectrum of professional and accredited childcare services is readily available in their own locality.

But with so much fantastic choice out there, how do you decide which is best for you and your child? The following are just some tips that may help you come to your decision a little easier:

Begin by starting your search about six months before you actually need the place, because the best centres fill up fast.

When you start looking, remember that a good childcare facility should have a welcoming, friendly atmosphere and should have a nurturing environment.

While your first impression will probably be the one you go with, don’t be afraid to ask parents you know who use the centre for their opinions. If they’re not singing its praises, you should probably move on.

Establish at the outset if the facility is flexible about things like times, pricing and holidays. Find out if you have to pay even if your child is out sick or on holidays. Also ask whether or not the centre has a sick child policy – ie. if you are required to keep your child at home if they suffer from particular illnesses.

The best childcare facilities have structured schedules that mix physical activity, quiet time, group activities, one to one sessions and meal times. Check that there isn’t an over reliance on TV and videos and make sure that what programmes are included in the schedule are age-appropriate and educational.

Also be on the look out for age-appropriate toys that encourage your child’s development.

Always ask about the staff ’s qualifications. Experienced, professional childcare providers are essential for your child’s development.

Also ask about their medical experience and whether they are equipped in things like CPR and other emergency training.
