Catherine Newman’s

Eclectic night of drama and comedy ahead

- Catherinenewman11@eircom.net

‘STAGED’, an eclectic night of drama, will be presented in Glash Community Centre on February 22/23/24 at 8pm nightly.

Mike Guerin, Newmarket Drama Group, Aidan O’Keeffe, Newtivity Youth Drama and Mary Angland will all be presenting short plays (5-15 minutes) on the night. There will be a mix of intense drama and sharp comedy on show and all the pieces are by local writers.

Aidan O’Keeffe is a Kanturk native whose ‘Ceann Toirc Trilogy’ series has featured on Culture Night in Kanturk for the last two years. He has had short plays staged in Cork Arts Theatre and he will be presenting a solo piece similar to the plays that he performs annually at Clonakilty Arts Festival.

Mary Angland writes fiction and drama, and has just finished her first novel. Her plays ‘Catching the Train’ and ‘Coffee Break’ have been performed in Friars’ Gate Theatre in Kilmallock. Her comedic plays have been performed on Culture Night and at the night of drama at Kanturk Arts Festival for the last three years but for ‘Staged’ she’s decided to give us a darker twist.

The highlight of Mike Guerin’s writing career is a framed poem of his that hangs on the wall of Scully’s Bar. He will be performing a gritty play of his that was staged at last year’s Kanturk Arts Festival alongside fellow Newmarket Drama Group actors John O’Sullivan and Noelene Quinn. He will also be presenting a play by his oldest drama class, most of whom were involved in the short play which won Newmarket’s Got Talent in 2016.

Newtivity Youth Drama will be making their debut on the night. They are a group of secondary school pupils from the locality who are interested in drama but are a bit too old for school nativity plays, hence their name. They might be a youth group but they intend to maintain a level of performance equal to (or maybe better!) than the adults who have been hamming it up for years.

Ireland has a long tradition of supporting the arts, from bards to fit-ups. In modern times we all watch a lot of American and English produced television shows and movies - whereas art is supposed to hold up a mirror to society - we are all spending a lot of time looking in the wrong mirrors.

So, come on out to Glash and support the work of Sliabh Luachra writers and actors in an intimate venue set in the heart of the mountainous uplands that make us who we are.
