Irish Water goes back to school for some lessons in Mallow
AS part of their efforts to promote engineers’ week, Irish Water staff based in Mallow have been busy visiting local schools and taking part in a series of events to promote engineering.
Co-ordinated by Engineers Ireland, the initiative aims to encourage students, their teachers and parents to explore the world of engineering and possibly consider it as a career in the future.
With more than 800 staff across the country, Irish Water has employees working across many different engineering sector, including more than 60 in Mallow.
Many of these took part in visits to schools across the area including the Patrician Academy, St Mary’s, Davis College Scoil Ghobnatan, Mallow Convent Primary School and Gaelscoil Thomais Daibhis.
The students were shown a video outlining how water is treated from source to tap, with Irish Water staff performing some fun water experiments and speaking about engineering career paths and opportunities.
Irish Water’s regional information specialist, Aisling Buckley, said staff were delighted to be involved in the initiative – with some of them even re-visiting their old schools.
“This has been a great opportunity to tell people about what we are doing to fix our old water networks and improve water treatment to protect the health of generations to come,” said Aisling.
“The provision of clean drinking water and the disposal of wastewater in a manner that protects the environment is vital to our daily lives and for economic and social development. This is why initiatives such as this are critical for educating and informing our future generations about the importance of our work in this area,” she added.
