The Corkman

Rebel Óg award for Cullen singer

- BY JOHN TARRANT

ALL-IRELAND Féile an Gael triumphs for Maggie Moynihan from Cullen and the Carbery Rangers earned acknowledgement on selected as monthly winners to the Cork Rebel Óg Awards at a function in the Clayton Silver Springs Hotel.

That follows a rewarding trip to Sligo for Cork teams with national titles won in addition to a runner up place for Kilshannig Music and third place to the Boherbue quiz team. To secure national honours, Maggie bettered opponents from Bannow/Ballymitty (Wexford); Gowna (Cavan) and Mohill (Leitrim).

Cullen’s Maggie Moynihan entered the amhránaíocht aonair in scór for the first time when she was nine and hasn’t stopped competing. Winner of her first Duhallow final at the age of eleven years, she has enjoyed success and progress each year, winning a Munster title and a ticket to the All-Ireland Final last month. The latest All-Ireland Scór title for Cullen bridges a 46 years gap since the late Con ‘Corney’ O’Sullivan won national honours in the 1972 Scór Sinsir at Ceol Uirlise.

Maggie sang Cooraclare, a song which means a lot to her family and is always the first song to be sung at family parties. Scór has played a very important role in Maggie’s life so far and she has made many great friends from participation.

County Board officers John Purcell, Chairman, Rebel Óg; Jerry Walsh, Cultural Officer and County Mayor Cllr. Declan Hurley applauded the Cork triumphs delivered by fantastic role models, stating their success was testament to the dedication and interest of participants. In the presence of a capacity attendance, Maggie Moynihan sampled delight to collect outright honours in solo singing after delivering a superb rendition of the emigration song “Cooraclare” to land an All Ireland title for the Duhallow club for the first time in 46 years.
