CHARLEVILLE and Castlelyons played out a competitive County IHL Division 1 match at Charleville on Sunday. Both sides were short some key players. The visitors had the aid of the slight breeze in the first half and were quick to get on the scoresheet.
Points by Darragh Lawlor and two pointed frees by Michael Spillane opened up a 0-3 to 0-0 lead after 9 minutes. Charleville had their first score in the 11th minute when Andrew Cagney worked hard for Danny O’Flynn who sent over. Aidan O’Sullivan landed a long range point with Andrew Cagney replying from a free. Cagney had two more pointed frees that had them level 0-4 each after 18 minutes. Castlelyons did well from here to half time. Their defence were very solid and points by Michael Spillane (2), Colm O’Neill, Eoin Maye and Alan Fenton had them 0-9 to 0-4 clear at the interval.
Charleville improved immensley on the restart. Early points by Mark Kavanagh and Andrew Cagney (free) were followed by an Alan Fenton point that put the East Cork side 0-10 to 0-6 clear. The Rathluirc side forced level by the 47th minute when Mark Kavanagh and James Kennedy (2) hit points. They edged ahead through another Andrew Cagney pointed free. Andrew Cagney and Tim Hawe with points opened up a threepoint lead 0-13 to 0-10.
Castlelyons finished very strong. Michael Spillane hit some well taken points as Alan Fenton struck the equaliser in injury time.
Best for Charleville Darren Butler, Cathal O’Carroll, Finbarr Cagney, Mark Kavanagh, James Kennedy, and Danny O’Flynn. For Castlelyons Jack Barry, Aidan O’Sullivan Tom Carroll, Alan Fenton and Michael Spillane did well.
