Early Music at the Triskel

FREE CONCERT TO START VENUE’S ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

- BILL BROWNE

THE Triskel Christchurch Arts Centre will mark four decades of providing top-quality entertainment to the people of Cork with a free concert at the venue on Friday night.

The special concert, that will feature a programme of ‘Early Music’, will be the opening event of a landmark programme put together for the forthcoming years to mark both the 40th anniversary of the arts centre and the 300th anniversary of Christchurch.

The concert will be recorded and subsequently broadcast on RTÉ Lyric FM on Wednesday March 21 to mark European Day of Early Music. European Broadcasting Union stations across the continent will also be broadcasting the concert during the course of the year.

Early music is widely regarded as being one of the liveliest, most moving and listenable genres within the classical field, stretching from music by Handel, Vivaldi and Bach through to the 19th century. Played on original instruments, it also stretches back through early Baroque and Renaissance to the very earliest surviving written music.

The artistic director at the Triskel, Tony Sheehan, said it was fitting that the first concert of the 2018 programme should feature a performance of Early Music.

“Early Music was in many ways the ‘pop music’ of its day and is ideal for the Triskel, which has incredibly beautiful acoustics and a stunning visual background,” he said.

Friday night’s concert will feature a performance by Alternative History, a project that brings together singers Anna Maria Friman and John Potter with lutenists Ariel Abramovich and Jacob Heringman.

“Inspired by the practice of renaissance musicians re-arranging the acappella polyphony of their predecessors and contemporaries, Alternative History create new and inspiring repertoires for voice and lute,” said Mr Sheehan.

John Potter is well known for his work with the world renowned Hilliard Ensemble, Anna Maria Friman is a member of the Nordic group Trio Medieval and lutenists Ariel Abramovich and Jacob Heringman are regarded as among the foremost of musicians of their craft in the world.

All four already have a special relationship with Cork having performed the inaugural concert ‘Amores Pasados’ at the prestigious Triskel ECM weekend.

Tickets for the Alternative History performance on Friday night are free (max two per person) and will be released at 11am on the morning of the concert.
