SNOWFALL
Storm Emma and The Beast brought a welcome amount of snow to the Parish ensuring that we could all avail of the fun without it impacting too much on us and our infrastructure. It was lovely to see the gathering of people in the village and at junctions as well as the hilly parts of the Parish where groups met to make the most of it all. We would like to thank those who took the time to make sure the older people, those living alone and those who are more vulnerable were well prepared and safe throughout it all.

ith the desperate weather conditions last week end, the bombastic weather that we encountered, and with safety of players, and spectators of paramount importance, all games last weekend had to be cancelled. At the time of going to print, revised dates are not agreed to for the forecasted U21 Football championship.
The lack of games meant that the children and players in Killavullen got a great opportunity to utilise some slopes around the village for winter sport activities, and sledging was particularly popular. A variety of implements had to be utilised for the improvised sleighs but the main point was that great fun was had by all, and all persons stayed safe.
Gender heave in Killavullen GAA: It was very interesting to listen to the views of the new GAA president John Horan when he was at pains to defend the amateur status of the GAA, his opinions on the growth of development squads in Counties and the rise of elitism within the GAA.
The onus is on all clubs to provide the very best facilities that they can muster for their players and supporters. Standing still is not an option.
On-going with Killavullen GAA club at the moment is a gender heave as more and more girls play our games, in our community, and Killavullen club investigate the extent of the lack of gender equality in the GAA community, via surveys, interviews and statistical analysis. The results press the club to look acutely at their existing facilities.
Currently, Killavullen GAA Club has fantastic cooperation existing between the ladies club in the parish under the steerage of Niall Hanrahan, the juvenile club where Tom Barry is at the helm and the adult club where the co-chairpersons, Joe Howard and Rory Lankford. Dedicated nights are set aside for the ladies club at the moment and the playing of their games on the pitches or training facilities.
The key questions that need to be addressed are the amount of training facilities available, the pitches, and the resources of the club to support increased numbers, which brings constraints but equally brings fantastic opportunities. People support progress, and Killavullen is a progressive club.
What is happening at the moment is that more and more clubs have to resort to having flood lights on the playing fields, which can accommodate night time games. Mallow, Fermoy, Kildorrery, Mourne Abbey and Kilworth are to be commended on their initiatives.
Killavullen facilities have improved in the recent number of years, but we have a lot more left to do, and we cannot rest on our laurels.
