SNEACHTA SNOWBALLS AND IGLOOS

Coachford, like every other village was covered in a blanket of snow from Thursday to Sunday and while it may have brought difficult times for farmers, drivers and the elderly, it was a time of pure joy for the young and not so young. There were hundreds of snow men and snow women of all shapes and sizes built in gardens and roadsides. Some were adorned with flags, hats and scarves while others were decked out in various GAA jerseys.

This March snowfall also brought out the builders in many communities with igloos propping up in gardens all over the community. Some were thrown together while others would make any Eskimo construction company proud. The village was busy as many locals shopped at home and stayed local throughout the weekend.

The wintery weather put a stop to all the planned sporting fixtures, however there was never any fear that the young boys and girls would sit at home twiddling their thumbs. Hordes of children took to the slopes surrounding the village and used plastic fertiliser bags, car bonnets, homemade sleds and anything else that could propel them down the pristine slopes of the new alpine like ski resort of Coachford. The laughter and joy could be heard all around the community.

Later on Friday evening the older teenagers embarked on a massive snowball pitch battle at the village crossroads. Those that witnessed it said it was fast, furious and freezing. Snowballs of various sizes were hurled from one side of the street to the other. Running raids resembling scenes from the Battle of Clontarf continued for hours until coldness and dwindling stocks of snowballs finally brought this teenage conflict to an end. As rain fell on Sunday and the thaw approached, once proud snowmen began to melt and disappear into the grass of peoples gardens. Those that stubbornly hung on began to look like extras from a snowman zombie movie with missing heads and limbs as they slipped into the cold ground.

All that is left now of these lovingly constructed snow sculptures are discarded carrots and lumps of coal. The blanket of snow covering the hills and valleys around Coachford showed us once again what a beautiful place we live in. The support and friendliness shown by neighbours during this difficult few days reminded us all of how lucky we are to call Coachford our home. The snow has now almost disappeared but the memory of it will live in our children’s and our memories for a long time to come.

COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

The Community Association organised a Snowman building competition last weekend. People were asked to send in photographs of the snowman they built to the Coachford News Facebook page. There were over 90 entries and the winners will be announced this weekend.

Chairperson of the CCA, Maighread Ní Buachall said “The snow brought many difficulties for a lot of people but also brought a lot of fun. It was great to see so many people shopping locally and we should pay tribute to the local shops and businesses who opened when they could and provided a wonderful service to the community. No one went hungry or thirsty in Coachford. We would now appeal to people to continue to support local. It is at times like this that people realise how important our local shops are and for us to lose any of them would be devastating for a community like ours.”

OVER 60S TALENT

Entries are now open for the Coachford heat of the Over 60s Talent Show on Sunday March 25th . The competition, now in it’s 42nd year is open to anyone from Cork who is over 60. The organisers, Coachford Foróige club are seeking singers, musicians, story tellers or comedians to take part in the Coachford heat.

“We are so excited about being asked to host this event. We were thrilled when talent show organiser, Paddy O’Brien approached us to host the Coachford Heat. We see it as a great opportunity for us to get more involved with those older than us and to learn from them and to share our experiences.” Said Emer Barry Murphy, Club PRO.For more information contact Karolyne on 086 8678207 or Deirdre on 086 2235901.

COACHFORD 5 MILE

The Coachford 5 Mile Road Race has been voted the Best Cork Road Race of 2017 by the readers of the influential ‘Running in Cork’ blog. This website is the go-to-site for serious athletes in Cork and is one that they all turn to for information about races and advice about running in Cork. The Coachford 5 Mile Road Race beat off prestigious events like the Midleton 5 mile to win the award.

“We are absolutely thrilled to win this award. We always knew we had a great event but to have received this endorsement from so many Cork runners is very satisfying and a great boost to the organising committee. Our partnership with the West Muskerry Athletics club brought the 2017 race to a new level this year. Our race sponsors, MJ Kelleher Oils were also instrumental in making sure the event ran smoothly. The race is a huge community effort and wouldn’t be possible without the involvement and commitment of so many people from Coachford and surrounding areas. We are now looking forward to the 2018 event on Thursday, July 12.”, said Jerh O’Sullivan chair of the organising committee.
