ANIMAL FARM WINS FOR COLAISTE MHUIRE IN BUTTEVANT

- MARIA HERLIHY

STUDENTS at Colaiste Mhuire returned to home ground as All Ireland Drama champions at the weekend after their performance of Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Success has flown quite easily to the school, as it previously won the competition in 2016 and also won the best original script category last year.

However, this year was certainly the icing on the cake because its directors, the Mallow actor Martin Lucey and teacher, Laura Hayes also received the award of Best Director.

The All Ireland Transition Year Drama Festival is in its 18th year and is open to students in the south and year 11 in post primary schools in the North of Ireland.

Teacher and Director, Laura Hayes told The Corkman that both she and Martin Lucey felt that Animal Farm would be something different to undertake and do for a competition as it is a very interesting play.

Martin Lucey has been involved in plays at the school for the past seven years and for Laura, it is her third year rolling up her sleeves and getting stuck in. She said the entire school and hard-working 17 cast members were “delighted” with the win.

Animal Farm by Orwell was his representation of the Russian Revolution. As was the case, all the animals are equal but some are more equal than others as life for all the animals – except the pigs is harsh.

By the end of the play, with the pigs walking on their hind legs as they took on many other qualities of their former human oppressors – it become impossible to differentiate the pigs from the humans.

Mallow native, Martin Lucey has appeared in countless plays and is also known for his work in The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Shem the Penman Sings Again and Parked.

Anyone who wants to see the students stage this award winning play can do so with the help of local Buttevant drama group, Friary Players which will take place at the school on Friday, March 23 at 7.30pm.
