Lights out for Newmarket and Clyda Rovers

-

Newmarket 2-4 Clyda Rovers 0-7 (abandoned in the 32nd minute due to power light failure)

THE meeting of Clyda Rovers and Newmarket in the Co Div 2 FL at Mourneabbey on Saturday night was called to a halt two minutes into the second half when a power failure left the teams in the dark.

At the time Newmarket were leading by three minutes. In a keenly contested opening half the Rovers started in a very determined manner with Fionn O’Shea setting up Seamus Ronayne for the games opening score a point in the second minute.

Cian O’Sullivan and Daniel O’Callaghan followed with minors that moved them 0-3 to no score in front by the sixth minute. Newmarket quickly settled. Daniel Culloty had a point from a free in the 10th minute.

From the kickout the Duhallow side won possession with Donal Hannon cutting through the Rovers defence to kick to the net.

In the 18th minute Newmarket struck for a second goal when a free by Daniel Culloty dropped short with the alert Barry O’Connor on hand to finish to the net following a goal mouth scramble 2-2 to 0-3.

For the rest of the half Clyda Rovers recovered very well.

Cian O’Sullivan and Fionn O’Shea kicked over two long range points before a great movement involving Chris Kenny and Seamus Ronayne saw Cian O’Sullivan cut through the Newmarket defence with his attempt for a goal going narrowly over the crossbar for a point.

Just before the half-time whistle Colin Kelly added another point for the Mourneabbey outfit who trailed at the short whistle by 2-2 to 0-7.

On the changeover Newmarket were quick into their stride.

Daniel Culloty and Kevin O’Sullivan had two points in as many minutes before the game came to a sudden halt in the 32nd minute due to power light failure.
