Heavy defeat for CBS

St Patrick’s Maghera 2-15 Mitchelsto­wn CBS 1-9

ST Patrick’s Maghera had a ninepoint win over Mitchelsto­wn CBS in the All Ireland Senior B HC Paddy Buggy Cup semi final at Dublin City University Grounds on Saturday. CBS got off to a dream start with early points by James Keating (2) and John Hunter.

They were reduced to 14 players when Mark Keane was red carded in the ninth minute. They struggled from here with James Keating their inspiratio­nal player having to go to centre back for a period. Gradually St. Patrick’s thundered into the game. They played Richie Mullan as a sweeper and he was very effective. Up front Fintan Bradley and Tiernan McHugh took some very good scores.

Three points in a 10 minute spell had them level 0-3 each. Further pressure by St Patrick’s saw Dominic Bradley Tiernan McHugh and Fintan Bradley (free) open up a lead 0-6 to 0-3. CBS forced a free when Tomas Vaughan was fouled and James Keating pointed. Good play for the Derry side by Peadar McLoughlan led to a foul on Fintan Bradley that Richie Mullan converted. In the 28th minute James Keating pointed another free with Ruairi Rafferty and Tiernan McHugh working well for Fintan Bradley who goaled just before the break as the winners held an interval lead 1-7 to 0-5.

For the second half CBS moved Christy O’Sullivan to partner Lorcan Finn in midfield. An early foul on Cathal O’Mahony led to a James Keating pointed free. Tiernan McHugh replied for the winners with Fintan Bradley edging his side double scores clear after 36 minutes 1-9 to 0-6.

A period of sustained pressure saw St. Patrick’s add four rapid points that put them 10 clear 1-13 to 0-6 at the end of the third quarter. CBS made a great rally James Keating had two pointed frees and followed with a well taken goal after good play Aaron O’Brien, Darragh Flynn and Cathal O’Mahony that suddenly cut the lead to five points 1-13 to 1-8.

Good play by Christy O’Sullivan and Cathal O’Mahony led a brilliant point by Cathal Harrington in the 49th minute. This proved to be CBS’s last score. St Patrick’s had a goal by Tiernan McHugh after a three man attack in the 52nd minute. They secured their place in the final with two late points.
