Gerry White to return as guest speaker
THE Millstreet National Monument Committee have announced the Easter Sunday Commemoration in Town Square Millstreet following 11.30 Mass will be addressed by guest speaker Gerry White.
A well known military historian and an author of several books on WW1 and local history, including ‘A Great Sacrifice – Cork Servicemen Who Died In The Great War’ and ‘ The Burning of Cork’ with Brendan O’Shea, he also wrote ‘Baptised in Blood’ the Cork story of 1916.
Recently Gerry contributed two articles to the Bord Gáis Energy Book of the Year relating to the full story of Ireland’s revolutionary history from 1913 to 1923. ‘Atlas of the Irish Revolution’ was edited by John Crowley, Donal Ó Drisceoil, Mike Murphy and John Borgonovo. Published by Cork University Press, the book draws together existing and ongoing research into the revolutionary period, and includes contributions from leading scholars from a range of disciplines and Gerry White was one of many who contributed to this award winning book.
Mr. White was a familiar face on television during the 1916 Commemorations and wrote extensively on the 1916 period in both local and national press in the lead up to the 1916 commemorations.
His previous visit to Millstreet two years ago sawe him deliver a fascinating lecture entitled ‘Order, Counter-order, Disorder The Cork Story of 1916’. His conbtribution was in conjunction with the launch of The book ‘Ready, Willing, Waiting, the MIllstreet Story of 1916’ by Noreen Meaney and The Millstreet Monument Committee.
The Millstreet National Monument Committee extend an invitation to the public all to attend the event after 11.30 mass in Millstreet. As always, the Millstreet Pipe Band will be in attendance.
