GAA CLUB NOTES

FOOTBALL GODS CONSPIRE AGAINST US – On a glorious spring morning in Fermoy last Sunday, the football gods conspired against Killavullen in their game against Fermoy, in round two of the Avondhu Junior A Football League. In the first instance, the Fermoy Intermediate Football games against Castletownbere that was scheduled for Sunday did not go ahead, but a player that may have been involved in that game was thus available to Fermoy, and secondly, Killavullen held back some of their minor players that were legitimate to play for a minor game in the afternoon, that was cancelled at the last moment when Charleville had to forfeit the game.

Those factors, coupled with a large number of injuries and absentees meant that Killavullen had a skeleton crew available for selection.

Fermoy opened brightly and had the ball in the ball of the Killavullen net by the third minutes when they worked a number of intricate passes together and scored from close range. They then scored a free in the fifth minute before Liam Cronin scored our opening score from play in the eighth minute.

Fermoy scored again in the 10th and 12th minute and would have scored again but for great play by Pa Sheehan and Billy Norris in particular, but Mike Cronin, in his unaccustomed position of corner back was doing well also. Charlie Lillis got a fantastic point from distance in the 12th minute before Fermoy replied with another point in the 14th. Jack O’Connor scored for us in the 17th minute, and we got another beauty of a score from Charlie, who had the beating of his man, all day long, in the 18th minute.

James Angland made two outstanding saves and we raced up field for Paul O’Sullivan got a fine point in the 19th minute before Charlie Lillis converted a free after Pa Cronin was fouled in the 25th minute, to leave only a point between the teams. Fermoy rallied though before half time and tacked over points in the 26th and 29th minute. At the interval, the score was 1-06 to 0-06 in their favour.

Fermoy started brightly in the second period, and scored in the third, fourth and from a free in the seventh minute before we temporarily stopped their momentum with a pointed free from Charlie in the 11th minute. Fermoy had an array of substitutes to bring into the game, and they made a telling difference in and around the middle of the field. We tried manfully to stem the tide but we got overran. They scored two points of real class, curled over from distance from players, used to playing at a higher level, in the 12th and 13th minutes, before Charlie scored another free in the 15th minute.

Fermoy tacked on further scores in the 16th and 17th minutes. Again our only outlet was to raise another white flag from a free in the 18th minute from Charlie after David Brosnan had been fouled. Fermoy answered that back with two further points in the 20th and 22nd minute before we got another free in the 23rd which Charlie converted which proved to be our final score of the game. Fermoy got one further point in the 25th minute to run out worthy winners on a final score of 1-16 to 0-10

The team and those who scored were: James Angland, Colin O’Gorman, Pa Sheehan, Michael Cronin, Ian O’Gorman, Kevin Fox, Billy Norris, Paul O’Sullivan (0-01), Liam Cronin (0-01), Seán Woulfe, David Brosnan, James Magner, Charlie Lillis (0-07, 0-05F), Pa Cronin, Jack O’Connor (0-01). Substitutes: Gary Lane for Colin O’Gorman, Eddie Cotter for Seán Woulfe, Michael Fresh for Pa Cronin, Seán Woulfe for Eddie Cotter.

OPENING JUVENILE MATCH OF THE YEAR – On a desperately heavy pitch in Killavullen last Saturday, Killavullen under-14 football team went down narrowly to Kilshannig in the opening game of the Rebel Óg North A Grade football league.

The lower goals mouth area, nearest the river Blackwater was particularly heavy, that the players struggled to get their legs out of. Killavullen missed some gilt edged chances on the day, but equally were indebted to Niall in goals for saving a Kilshannig penalty.

In Donnacha O’Doherty, Kilshannig have a player of exceptional talent and his class was evident on the day. Best for Killavullen were Kian Lane, Christopher O’Callaghan and Patrick O’Grady.

The team and those who scored were: Niall Murray, Donal Cronin, Joe Cagney, Conor Sheehan (0-01), Eoin O’Hanlon, Christopher O’Callaghan, Conor Breenan, Ultan Cottey, Patrick O’Grady (0-01), Kian Lane (0-05), Daniel Ryan (1-01), Luke Carey, Ian O’Mahony (1-00), Jamie Magner, Oisin Larkin.
